The Government delegate in Extremadura, José Luis Quintana, and the Superior Chief of Police of Extremadura, María Elisa Fariñas, presided today in the Government Delegation the act of tribute to the victims of Terrorism of the National Police in Extremadura.
Quintana wanted to pay tribute to all those men and women who gave their lives for the freedom and security of our country. “This is our modest tribute to the national police killed by the criminal gang ETA, with this act we want to express our sincere gratitude, recognize their sacrifice and keep their memory alive, ensuring that their legacy lasts through time and that future generations do not forget the high price that peace cost.”
In this regard, the delegate has reaffirmed the ethical and moral commitment that the Government of Spain has to the victims, that is why in 2011 the Law of Recognition and Integral Protection to the Victims of Terrorism was approved, a law that articulates the resources of the State to compensate, as much as possible, the pain of the victims and their families.
During his speech, Quintana explained that Spanish society and its government have decided not only to help the victims and their families, but also to publicly acknowledge their exemplary nature. “We are very clear that we must keep alive in Spanish society the memory, the dignity of the victims, justice and truth” said the delegate.
The delegate also recalled that Extremadura never suffered a terrorist attack in the territory but that more than half a hundred Extremeños gave their lives because of the unreason of terrorism and many more have suffered its consequences.
“Today we remember the National Police who lost their lives at the hands of terrorist barbarity; let us remember them with pride. All of them gave their lives for democracy and peace; for a Spain that is safe and free of violence; it is our obligation not only to remember and honor them, but to fight every day for a democratic, tolerant and peaceful Spain,” concluded Quintana.
