The DGT has launched a campaign to control and monitor the use of safety belts and child restraint systems (CRS), which will be in force from today until Sunday, March 17, on the roads of the region. The campaign will intensify the work of inspecting the use of seatbelts, both by drivers and occupants, regardless of whether they are in the front or rear seat. Likewise, the correct use of child restraint systems for children who must use it will be the subject of special attention.
In the last campaign on restraint systems, carried out from March 6 to 12, 2023 in Extremadura, there were a total of 3956 controlled vehicles, of which 99 were reported by agents of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard.
Effectiveness of Retention Systems
Safety belts and child restraint systems are among the most effective measures to protect motor vehicle occupants from road accident injuries. The use of seatbelts by drivers reduces the risk of fatal or serious injury in about 60% of cases, and proper and properly used child restraint systems can reduce the risk of children dying or being seriously injured by 55% to 60%.
While the effectiveness of these safety systems has been scientifically proven, there are still a significant number of drivers and occupants who do not use a restraint system or use it incorrectly. On interurban roads in 2022, 76% of deaths aged 12 years and over, occupants of passenger cars and vans, used the seatbelt, and on urban roads 54% of deaths took it.
The aim is to ensure that all persons occupying vehicles, adults or minors, travelling in the rear or in the front seats, use the seatbelt or make appropriate use of the CRS, regardless of the road on which they travel.
