The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through Adif High Speed (Adif AV), has litigated for 11.2 million euros (VAT included) two contracts for the execution of actions aimed at protecting fauna and flora in the environment of the LAV railway network in Extremadura.
The first of the contracts, awarded for 7.5 million euros, is aimed at improving the sustainability and environmental permeability of the infrastructure in the Badajoz-Portuguese Border and Monfragüe-Plasencia sections. The works include the adaptation of structures and the adaptation of the drainage system through the execution of new wildlife steps that facilitate their mobility in the environment.
These actions are part of the works to adapt these sections to their future operating parameters, which include the installation of perimeter enclosures and the elimination of a level crossing, which will be replaced by a higher crossing, thus increasing the safety conditions of the railway infrastructure.
The second contract, for 3.7 million euros, is aimed at restoring landscaping the excavations carried out for the execution of the slopes of the southern plinth of the viaduct on the Tagus River, as well as complementary environmental measures in the Talayuela–Plasencia section.
The landscape restoration will be carried out to reduce the visual impact of the slopes in this area. The works consist of the cleaning of the area, the construction of wall on terraces and execution of anchors; the landscape treatment of the elevation of the wall through the application of colorock (visual integration of the rock); the construction of new perimeter drainage ditch in the coronation of the slope and the filling of land in gardeners.
In addition, complementary measures will be carried out in the Talayuela–Plasencia section, which will allow the interrelationship of the railway infrastructure with protected spaces and species in the lands owned by the Junta de Extremadura, within the province of Cáceres, among which is the Monfragüe Natural Park. These are actions to improve the habitat in the land, limiting certain areas to the entrance of the cattle, protection of fauna and creation of artificial rafts, among others.
The implementation of this work contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 15 (life of terrestrial ecosystems), which ensures the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems; and 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure).
