The Government delegate in Extremadura, José Luis Quintana, announced today that the new Senior Chief of Police in Extremadura, Elisa Fariñas, and Extremadura singer Elsa Tortonda will be distinguished this year with the award “Women who break 2024” that the Government Delegation in Extremadura awards each year on the occasion of the commemoration of International Women’s Day. Quintana made this announcement today in Badajoz during the act of taking possession of Fariñas as the new Superior Chief of Police in Extremadura.
María Elisa Fariñas was born in Madrid and joined the National Police in 1984 on the basic scale, the first destination being the Superior Headquarters of Madrid, and since then, she has been ascending to the different scales by internal promotion. With Extremadura roots, in 2009, and after her promotion as chief inspector, she was assigned to the General Commissariat of Aliens and Borders, where she remained until in 2016 she rose to the rank of Commissariat and headed the local Commissariat of Mérida. In 2019 she was assigned to the Training and Improvement Division, where she held the Head of the Area of Selective Processes. Since the month of June 2023, she has been Chief Commissioner.
Elsa Tortonda, winner of the 2023 edition of the television program “La Voz” in Antena 3, is a native of Villafranca de los Barros and a student of Journalism at the University of Seville, although her great passion is music. Before arriving at ‘La Voz’, the young woman from Extremadura participated in the junior version of the program, ‘La Voz Kids’, and tried her luck in other music contests such as ‘Idol Kids’ (2019) and ‘Got Talent’ (2021)
The Government Delegation in Extremadura awards these awards every year to recognize Extremadura women who are known for breaking with traditional or masculinized stereotypes. These distinctions reach their third edition in 2024 and the award ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5.
