The Government Delegation in the Valencian Community has displayed the LGTBI flag on the facade of its headquarters, in the Temple Palace, on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia that is celebrated on May 17. This event was chaired by the government delegate, Pilar Bernabé, accompanied by representatives of LGTBI associations.
Bernabé has reiterated “the Government’s commitment to the real and effective equality of LGBTI people and the defense of their rights both nationally and internationally.” In this regard, he stressed that “Spain is one of the countries with the best legal and political environment in terms of protecting the rights of LGBTI people.” The citizenry, Bernabé said, “needs its rulers to improve their quality of life and guarantee their freedom in an egalitarian society that welcomes and protects them.” However, “the PP, in the Valencian Community especially, does not know how to protect citizens, does not show signs of protecting Valencians and Valencians and already does so in all cases”. “We have listened to political leaders, such as the mayor of Valencia, who last year compared the display of the LGBTI flag with the flags that hung when they were days that commemorated diseases. This is what we are hearing: the most reactionary right, the cruellest right.” That is why “the Government of Spain is, once again, the refuge for people who want to feel free, for people who want to be rich in their rights and, above all, the refuge for people who feel signalled by a government that does not understand them”, said the delegate.
The manifesto against LGBTIphobia approved at the last Council of Ministers recalls that the Government of Spain has promoted a State Strategy for the Equal Treatment and Non-Discrimination of LGBTI Persons and a State Strategy for the Social Inclusion of Trans Persons, which will be added to other resources already under way, such as Service 028 Rainbow of information and comprehensive care in LGBTI rights, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, or the recent appointment of the Independent Administrative Authority for Equal Treatment and Non-Discrimination, which will guarantee compliance with LGBTI protection and other matters. Also noteworthy is Royal Decree 1026/2024, which develops the obligation to have a planned set of measures for the equality and non-discrimination of LGTBI people in companies. Likewise, Spain has raised its voice and has been actively involved against the processes of regression that occur in the international sphere and within the European Union itself.
