· The Government of Spain is working on a draft Family Agriculture Law to “abound in the generational relay and abound in the leadership of women in the field”
· 27% of the ownership of agricultural holdings in the Valencian Community corresponds to women, while in Spain it is 29%
The delegate of the Government in the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabé, opened this morning the State Days of Rural Women organized by the Union of Women Farmers and Ranchers in Alboraia (Valencia), a meeting “in which today, on the eve of 8M, women from the rural world will talk about their profession, regulated and protected thanks to the courageous policies of the Government of Spain. Article 30 of the Equality Act promotes and develops the importance of the role of women in rural areas.”
In this act, the delegate has highlighted “the importance of women in the rural world where they have always been present”. The women, he said, “are mothers, farmers and livestock farmers. They are leaders. This is a great truth.” Despite this, for decades “their status as land workers did not translate into ownership”.
Currently, according to the data offered by Bernabé, 27% of the ownership of agricultural holdings in the Valencian Community corresponds to women, while in Spain it is 29%. In addition, since 2020, in the Valencian Community, the ownership of women owners has increased by 1.2% while in Spain it has decreased by 3.3%.
The delegate has indicated that “there is still a long way to go and for this rural women have the commitment of the Government of Spain” to the most pressing challenges such as “depopulation and the aging of the rural population”. In this sense, he has indicated that “the generational change will be guaranteed by creating an environment that favors the professional conditions, under equal conditions, of men and women in rural areas. And it is key to do it from environmental justice.” For this reason, he considered it “essential not to break the legal muscle with which the Consell del Botànic protected the garden against the threats of predatory urbanism of the right”.
Bernabé also stressed that the Government of Spain is working on a Preliminary Draft Law on Family Agriculture, which this week has begun the process of public consultation, “to establish a modernized regulatory framework that lays the foundations for the future. And to abound in the generational relay and abound in the leadership of women in the field.”
