The delegate of the Government in the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabé, has held a meeting with Aminata Soucko, president of Red Aminata, to inform her that she is one of the winners of the Meninas 2024 Awards, whose announcement and celebration is postponed after the effects of the dana.
Born in Mali and resident in Valencia for more than 10 years, Soucko is considered worthy of this recognition for her career and personal involvement in the fight against Female Genital Mutilation and for promoting the care, assistance, protection and recovery of victims; being a reference for migrant women and health professionals; and carrying out awareness-raising actions to prevent this form of violence against women.
Red Aminata, the association that she chairs, is established in València, from where she accompanies the survivors of Female Genital Mutilation and serves as social support. From the association, they work to recognize the need to provide information and support for the psychological and physical health of women who suffer in some way from mutilation.
On the occasion of the World Day of Zero Tolerance with Female Genital Mutilation, which is tomorrow, 6 February, commemorative banners have been displayed on the facade of the headquarters of the Government Delegation in the Valencian Community.
United Nations is fighting for its full eradication in 2030. In our country, female genital mutilation has been classified as an offence of injury since 2003 and is punishable by imprisonment from 6 to 12 years and disqualification from parental authority in the case of minors.
The practice of female genital mutilation is concentrated in about 30 countries in Africa and the Middle East and South Asia, where more than 200 million girls and women have suffered it.
