The delegate of the Government in the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabé, has stressed that the fight against gender violence, hate crimes and cybercrime have become the new challenges faced by “one of the most advanced and modern security bodies in the world”. Bernabé, who has presided over the events of the National Police Master’s Day together with the Superior Chief of Police in the Valencian Community, Carlos Gajero, has recognized the work of the Police and “its capacity to adapt to the new circumstances and realities of society”.
In this regard, he has indicated that “at a time when the upsurge in cases of gender violence continues to tear us apart as a society,” the National Police “has been a pioneer in the fight against these crimes since the 1980s, with the Family and Women Care Units (UFAM).”
Another challenge “to be faced” is the different displays of hate crimes. Spain is “at the forefront” in the fight against this type of crime – said Bernabé – by developing specific plans such as the II Action Plan to Combat Hate Crimes 2022-2024.
He also said that National Police officers are “the first line of defense that citizens have to face new forms of violence that are hidden on the Net.” In fact, according to the data of the last Report on Cybercrime in Spain, of 2023, the Valencian Community is the fourth autonomy that concentrates more reported facts in this area. So far in 2024, the National Police has processed 12,496 complaints of computer scams in the Valencian Community.
All in all, and thanks to the police work, “the Valencian Community is a safe place and the crime rate is adjusted to an autonomy like ours, with 5 million inhabitants but receiving more than 20 million visitors each year”.
Egalitarian environments and “more and better media”
The delegate recalled that “currently the National Police reaches 7,200 officers in the C. Valencian, of which about 20% are women”. The National Police “is one of the state security forces with the most women”, although “there are still many glass ceilings to be broken”. In addition, “the increase in the number of personnel has allowed to cover the workforce above 90% of the catalog”, he added.
In parallel, the delegate has expressed the commitment of the Government to guarantee “more and better means” to the National Police. At that point, he highlighted the new Public Employment Offer for this year, which provides for the entry of 2,086 agents or the €23M for the Zapadores Complex that represents “the largest investment in police infrastructures” and that will allow “next year to be a reality the second largest police station in Spain and one of the most modern”. In addition, the Ministry of the Interior plans an investment of € 52M in the Valencian Community for the improvement of different police stations.
