The delegate of the Government in the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabé, and the subdelegate of the Government in Alicante, Carlos Sánchez, met this morning with the president of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura, (CHS), Mario Andrés Urrea, to analyze the actions carried out by the agency in relation to conservation and maintenance of waterways. In this regard, the delegate has announced that the Secretary of State for the Environment has authorized the investment of eight million euros, for two years, for conservation work in the Segura basin.
The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, in Orihuela (Alicante), “a sign of the commitment of the Government of Spain to the Vega Baja region by bringing here the headquarters of this organization,” said the delegate.
Barnabas stressed that the “investment effort of the Government in the region is inspired by the spirit of consensus. And the government of Pedro Sánchez is committed to the rebirth of the Vega Baja after the very hard time that lived the region with the DANA of 2019, of which four years have now been completed.”
Bernabé also insisted that the Government “occupies and worries the safety of the inhabitants of the Vega Baja. The river needs to be prepared to prevent and protect citizens from possible adverse weather conditions.”
For this reason, the Government delegate has pointed out the “unprecedented effort of recent years made by the CHS in conservation of the basin. Annually, the Confederation has invested an average of 700,000 euros, which is far from the 80,000 euros per year invested by previous governments.”
Finally, Bernabé recalled that “the Ministry for the Ecological Transition has contacted the Generalitat several times to activate projects that were under way: on the one hand, the Plan of Avenues, with 200 million euros; and on the other, the reuse of water in two very important actions, both in the desalination plant of Torrevieja and in that of Orihuela, with an investment of 54 million euros”.
“These are important and necessary works for the Vega Baja. We, the government, are going to continue investing in conservation with respect to the CHS, with the eight million already authorized by the Secretary of State for the Environment in the Segura basin.”
