Irregular immigration in Spain fell by 25.6 percent in 2022, going from 41,945 arrivals in 2021 to 31,219 in 2022. This is reflected in the latest bi-weekly report on irregular immigration, updated to December 31 and published this Tuesday by the Ministry of the Interior.
The reduction is more pronounced in maritime entrances, which show a widespread fall on the coasts of the peninsula, Ceuta, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands, both in the number of irregular immigrants and in the number of boats. Illegal arrivals by sea fell by 27.9 percent, which is a reduction of 11,170 people compared to the previous year. In the case of boats, the figure drops by 445, 20.7 percent less.
The most significant decline in total numbers occurs in the Canary Islands, where irregular immigrants fell by 6,634, from 22,316 to 15,682, a 29.7 percent decrease from 2021. In the case of boats, the fall is even greater, at 35.4 percent, 192 less than in 2021.
The progressive decline in irregular immigration, which is decreasing for the second consecutive year and for the third time in four years, is based on the migration policy promoted by the Ministry of the Interior in this period, promoting cooperation with the countries of origin and transit of immigration and strengthening the fight against the mafias that traffic people. This double strategy allows to avoid in origin about 40 percent of the exits to the Spanish territory.
