The sinister traffic with animals represents 61% of the accident on the roads of Castilla y León

April 29, 2024. Road accidents involving animals already account for 61% of accidents on the roads of Castilla y León. In 2023, a total of 18,667 road accidents were recorded, in which 11,454 animals were involved, according to the latest report of the DGT that was reported in the annual Autonomous Traffic Commission that presided over the Government delegate in Castilla y León, Nicanor Sen.
In this way, last year, 31 accidents caused by the presence of fauna on the roads were recorded on an average daily basis. The figure represents a year-on-year drop of 8.3%, with 1,034 fewer accidents than in 2022.
99% of them ended up with material damage and a total balance of 85 injuries, which is the lowest figure in the last decade. A year in which there was no need to mourn any mortal victims. Since 2012, 12 people have died due to accidents involving animals in Castilla y León.
Burgos and León were the provinces that recorded the highest number of accidents involving animals, with 2,393 and 2,219 respectively, followed by Soria (1,518), in which eight out of 10 (79%) accidents recorded last year on their roads were due to the presence of fauna.

WILDLIFE
The wildlife is behind most accidents. The corzo remains the animal most involved in the road accident of Castilla y León, with 6,069 accidents with damages and 23 with victims; followed by the wild boar, with 3,311 accidents with damages and 24 accidents with victims. Far behind are the deer (572 claims and 4 victims); dogs (412 claims and 8 victims); birds (139 claims); badgers (119 claims and one victim), and cows (107 claims and 11 victims).
The report shows curious data such as that behind 13 accidents the wolf was involved; in five, mountain cats; in four, mountain goats, others with otters; three with pigs, and two with brown bears, both the latter in the province of León.
The N-122, which crosses the provinces of Zamora, Valladolid, Burgos and Soria, is once again the road that recorded the highest number of accidents involving animals, adding up to 456. Behind it was the N-234, which crosses Soria to Burgos capital, with 353 accidents; the N-110, which crosses the provinces of Segovia, Soria and Ávila, with 310 and the CL-626, which connects the port of Cerredo with Aguilar de Campoo, with 229.
Fifthly, the A-6 Motorway was located, where a total of 206 accidents were recorded. The A-62 was the other large high-capacity road in Castilla y León that recorded a significant number of accidents with the presence of fauna (136).
Finally, in terms of temporality, August was the month that counted the most accidents of this type, with 1,207, followed by November (1,151) and December (1,087).
