March 27, 2024.- Castilla y León remains one of the safest communities in Spain, with a crime rate (number of criminal offenses per 1,000 inhabitants) that stood at the end of 2023 at 37.4 points, which is 14 points less than the national average (51.2).
Data from the Ministry of the Interior’s Security Indicators report for the last quarter of 2023 indicate that Castilla y León remains the fifth safest community in Spain, behind Extremadura, Asturias, Galicia and Aragón. On the opposite side, the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Madrid are located, with a crime rate of more than 60 points.
The National Police and Civil Guard faced a total of 88,917 criminal offenses in Castilla y León during 2023, reaching the highest clarified crime rate of the last decade, after resolving more than 40%. For its part, the rate of arrests and investigations stood at 221 per 1,000 infractions.
To this end, the State Security Forces and Corps had a Community staff of 9,945 police officers available, which means a 6% increase in personnel in the last six years.
Specifically, the Civil Guard has 6,811 personnel and the National Police with 3,134, 1.7% and 16% more respectively than in 2016. In this way, Castilla y León has 4.2 troops per 1,000 inhabitants, that is, four points above the national average (3.6).
CYBERCRIME GROWS
The increase in the crime rate by 0.8% compared to 2022 was mainly due to the increase, by 19.4%, of crimes related to cybercrime. Specifically, during 2023, a total of 22,642 computer scams were recorded, compared to 18,968 recorded in the previous year, and 2,782 crimes committed in cyberspace.
Compared to the same period last year, conventional crime, which represents 71.4% of the total, registered a decrease of 3.1% in Castilla y León, being notable the fall in 37% of wilful homicides and consummate murders, which stood at 10 compared to the 16 recorded in 2022.
PROVINCIAL DATA
Palencia closed the year of 2023 as the safest province in the Community, with a crime rate that stands at 31.5 points, followed by Zamora (31.9) and Valladolid (36.5).
Soria was the province that recorded the highest crime rate, reaching 41.5 crimes per thousand inhabitants, which meant a year-on-year increase of three points. Le siguen Ávila (39,4), Burgos (39,3), Salamanca (38,9), Segovia (38,5) y León (37,8).
