Virginia Barcones attends the celebrations held in Cuéllar
Attend the festivities in honor of the Virgen del Rosario invited by the mayor, Carlos Fraile
August 30, 2023.- The delegate of the Government in Castilla y León, Virginia Barcones, attended today the celebrations in honor of the Virgen del Rosario that are held in the Villa de Cuéllar. During his stay he highlighted the effort made by the Cuellaranos to keep alive the traditions of their ancestors.
Virginia Barcones has attended the Segovian town invited by the mayor, Carlos Sastre, and accompanied by the subdelegate of the Government in Segovia, Marian Rueda.
During his visit he had the opportunity to see how the Cuellaranos, the oldest enclosures in Spain, feel and live. In this regard, it should be remembered that this festivity is known in writings dating from the 13th century, specifically in 1215.
The festivities held in Cuéllar have been declared of International Tourist Interest since 2018. It is the first and only non-religious celebration of Castilla y León with that title of honorary granted by the General Secretariat of Tourism of the Government of Spain. “In this sense, they are up to the Holy Week of Zamora, León or Valladolid to mention some religious festivities of Castilla y León that have that title,” said Barcones.
For the government delegate, such recognition would not be possible without the effort made by all Cuellarans over the centuries to “maintain their festivities. To keep alive the memory of the ancestors.”
Virginia Barcones has highlighted that the Civil Guard estimates that between 35,000 and 40,000 people go daily to the Cuéllar enclosures, “people who come to live the enclosures, to share with the neighbors this tradition.”
The festivities in honor of the Virgin of the Rosary go a little beyond the enclosures. Rocks such as ‘La Plaga’, ‘El Soto’, ‘El Pañudo’ and ‘El Encodo’ are responsible for giving even more colour to the streets of Cuéllar. The festivities of the Segovian town are with verbenas, popular games and activities for adults and children without forgetting the patron saint of the festivities.
The Government, through the Civil Guard, is collaborating with the correct development of these festivities. In this way, a squadron on horseback watches that the entire route of the confinement beyond the special security device established by the Benemérita on the occasion of the holidays.
