Toledo.- The delegate of the Government of Spain in Castilla-La Mancha, Milagros Tolón, presided this morning the commemorative act of the 181st anniversary of the foundation of the Civil Guard, which took place in the quartering of Toledo. “It is an honor for me to accompany you in this event, congratulations to the people who have received awards today and to the staff who have gone into the reserve situation in an institution that, since its foundation in 1844, has been synonymous with commitment, dedication and vocation for public service.”
She was joined by the Chief General of the Second Zone of the Civil Guard of Castilla-La Mancha, Francisco Javier Vélez; the Deputy Delegate of the Government of Spain in the province of Toledo, Carlos Ángel Devia; and the Chief Colonel of the Command of the Civil Guard of Toledo, José María Gil Cubo.
Next to citizenship
Milagros Tolón recalled that, “over almost two centuries, the Civil Guard has been able to evolve and adapt to the times, always maintaining its essence: to be at the side of the citizens, guaranteeing their security, their rights and their freedoms. Today we celebrate the trajectory of an institution loved and respected by Spanish society, and we do so recognizing the daily work of those who, with professionalism and sacrifice, protect our streets, our peoples, our borders and our democratic values.”
The government delegate recalled that the work of the Civil Guard “in Castilla-La Mancha is especially visible and necessary. We are a large community, with a large rural environment, in which the presence and closeness of the Body is essential.”
And he has given concrete examples. “Only in the last year we have seen concrete examples of your action, such as the recent dismantling of an important band dedicated to drug trafficking in the province of Toledo, the protection of the environment and the rural environment or rescue and assistance operations in episodes of storms such as DANA, the electric blackout of April 28 or the theft of cable in the AVE.”
Milagros Tolón has highlighted these last two events, “where your work has been fundamental in the rescue and evacuation of the passengers who remained on the trains detained, providing security and tranquility to the people affected”.
Security in the field
Or “the effort that is being made to improve security in the countryside, which is also reflected in Castilla-La Mancha, where subtractions in agricultural and livestock farms were reduced in 2024 by 8.9% compared to 2023. These successes and the affection that the citizens have for the Civil Guard are the result of the good work of the agents and the good direction of their commands.”
For all of this, Milagros Tolón said, “on behalf of the Government of Spain I would like to thank and congratulate all the men and women who make up the Civil Guard in our region. Also to their families, who share the effort and responsibility of a job that does not understand schedules or rest.”
Because, he insisted, “from the Government of Spain we are committed to continue strengthening the means, resources and working conditions of the State Security Forces and Bodies. We have demonstrated this with the greatest offer of public employment in decades, with the improvement of infrastructures and with the reinforcement of territorial deployment in areas such as Castilla-La Mancha”.
The Government delegate concluded by saying that “the Civil Guard is a pillar of the rule of law, a modern institution that combines tradition and effectiveness, that acts rigorously, with respect for fundamental rights and with closeness to citizenship. Congratulations on this 181st anniversary. You count on all my support, affection and respect. Let us continue to work together for a safer, freer and fairer Spain. You are a source of pride for our country.”
