Toledo.- The delegate of the Government of Spain in Castilla-La Mancha, Milagros Tolón, has accompanied His Majesties the Kings on Wednesday in the visit they have made in Toledo to the National Hospital of Paraplegicos, a center of reference in the treatment of spinal injury that has reached 50 years.
Don Felipe and Doña Letizia have visited the facilities of the center and have shared and talked with patients, medical teams and hospital staff, which was inaugurated on October 7, 1974 by the then princes of Spain, Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía.
Milagros Tolón has indicated in his social networks that the Hospital “is a reference of our health system and a pride for Castilla-La Mancha” that celebrates half a century. “Accompanying the Kings on their visit is a pride and recognition of the work of their professionals and the strength of their patients,” he adds.
The event was also attended by the president of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page; the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz; the president of the regional courts, Pablo Bellido, and the mayor of Toledo Carlos Velázquez, among other authorities.
The National Paraplegic Hospital of Toledo is the public hospital of reference in Spain for the treatment of spinal injury. After being managed by the former INSALUD, on January 1, 2002, health transfers took place and the Government of Castilla-La Mancha assumed the ownership of the National Paraplegic Hospital. Its scope of action is that of a national reference center specializing in spinal cord injury, recognized by the Ministry of Health of the Government of Spain.
The fundamental mission of the National Paraplegic Hospital consists of:
- Provide comprehensive health and rehabilitation services to people with spinal cord injury in a timely, effective manner, with professional and human quality and generating social profitability.
- To carry out high-quality scientific and technical research in the field of neurosciences and, specifically, in relation to the problems that affect our patients, which entails promoting and making a real translational research reality that, in addition, contributes to the technological development of Castilla-La Mancha and Spain and transfers knowledge to the productive sector.
- To promote the training of highly qualified personnel in their field of activity.
Given the transcendence of spinal injury in the life of a person and in his environment, the work of the professionals of the center that make up the multidisciplinary team goes beyond the purely clinical aspects, which includes a vision of this reality from the social, educational, labor, psychological, cultural point of view and everything that, in short, helps to achieve the objective of integral rehabilitation and normalization of the life of patients.
As an institution, the National Paraplegic Hospital aspires to be a “Center of Excellence” with a position of national and international leadership in its fields of specialization from the point of view of care, research and continuing training.
