Toledo.- The delegate of the Government in Castilla-La Mancha, Milagros Tolón, and the territorial delegate of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), presented this Thursday at a press conference the climate balance of the autumn of 2024 in the region. A report that shows a very warm and humid autumn in terms of rainfall.
Tolón has highlighted that the average temperature in Castilla-La Mancha during the autumn has been 15.6 degrees, which is an anomaly of +1.2 degrees compared to the historical average. “The autumn of 2024 ranks 8th among the warmest since 1960, that is, the 8th warmest of the last 64 years,” he explained.
For months, September was described as a “cold” month, October was “warm” and November “extremely warm”, confirming the trend towards a more extreme climate.
In terms of rainfall, autumn has been considered humid, with an average of 162 liters per square meter, 111% more than the average rainfall of the reference period. This rainfall balance is marked by the DANA at the end of October, which left exceptional records such as:
174 l/m² in Mira (Cuenca)
150 l/m² in Fuensanta (Albacete)
136 l/m² in Campillos (Cuenca)
Climate emergency and role of AEMET
The government delegate stressed that this balance, together with the historical series and the episodes of torrential rains experienced, “confirms that we are in a context of climate emergency. Climate change kills. Denying scientific evidence is a dangerous positioning that we cannot allow. AEMET reports, alerts and warnings are an effective and essential tool to save lives and address the climate challenge,” he said.
Faced with the unjustified attacks received by the AEMET, the government delegate has recognized the work of the agency and has called on the population to trust its predictions, “elaborated with rigor and solvency to avoid unnecessary risks.”
Commitment of the Government of Spain
Finally, he recalled that this press conference responds to the commitment of the Government of Spain to report in a clear and accessible way on the evolution of the climate and the meteorological situation. “The work of the AEMET Delegation in Castilla-La Mancha and its professionals is essential to keep citizens informed and ensure their safety,” he concluded, thanking the territorial delegate and the entire team for their work.
Wind
For his part, Luis María Bañón has broken down the data advanced by the delegate, adding that strong wind was recorded on the days: 2 and 26 September; 9, 16, 17, 28 and 29 October; and 12, 21 and 25 November. The main wind episodes were those of October 9 and November 25.
The maximum races recorded were 90 km/h southwest in Almadén on October 9; 86 km/h south in Viso del Marqués on October 16; and 86 km/h southwest in Zaorejas GU on November 25.
Winter advance
The AEMET delegate has advanced the seasonal prediction for this winter, “which, as always, I say has a very relative expertise,” he said.
With all caution he has indicated that there is a high probability that the winter is warmer than normal and, in terms of precipitation, the behavior tends to be more normal and, in the southwest, the tendency to this precipitation is slightly below the usual one.
