Brihuega (Guadalajara).- The delegate of the Government of Spain in Castilla-La Mancha, Milagros Tolón, attended this Wednesday in Brihuega (Guadalajara) the NURIEX GU 2024 simulation (acronym for Nuclear Response Incident Exercise), a pioneering exercise to check the coordinated response to an emergency resulting from a radioactive leak at the Trillo nuclear power plant.
Milagros Tolón has highlighted that this is the first nuclear risk simulation of this magnitude, both because it is developed on the ground in a nuclear zone, and because of the large number of participants: more than 360 professionals from different bodies and emergency services.
Valuable data
"This simulation is an exceptional evaluation exercise that will yield a lot of valuable data. Next week a detailed evaluation is planned to establish the conclusions and possible improvements," explained the delegate.
Milagros Tolón has stressed the importance of this exercise, being the first time that the Es-Alert system is used in a nuclear risk scenario to warn the population. This system has been activated in nine municipalities, reaching more than 6,400 inhabitants. "It's critical that people know what kind of messages they would receive and how they would be alerted in an emergency," he added.
In addition, the delegate has shown her gratitude for the choice of Guadalajara to carry out this pioneering simulation, which reflects the confidence in the work carried out by the Subdelegation of the Government and the Guadalajara Nuclear Emergency Plan (PENGUA). "This is a vote of confidence in the effort and dedication of all those involved in nuclear risk management in the province," he said.
Low probability
Tolón has stressed that, although the probability of nuclear accidents is extremely low, it is essential to always be prepared to ensure effective action. "Organized action is the best guarantee of protection," he said. In addition, he recalled the importance of training not only responsible professionals, but also the population, so that they are informed and prepared for any eventuality.
Finally, he thanked all the participants in the simulation for their willingness and the demonstrated vocation of public service. "Thank you for collaborating in this exercise that undoubtedly contributes to improving our ability to respond to nuclear emergencies," concluded the Government delegate.
Milagros Tolón has been accompanied by the Government’s deputy delegate in Guadalajara, Susana Cabellos; the former deputy delegate and current director of the Cabinet of the Minister of Defense, Mercedes Gómez; the delegate of the Board in the province of Guadalajara, José Luis Escudero, and the head of the Civil Protection Unit of the Subdelegation, Gema Taravillo, as well as representatives of the State Security Forces, emergency services and other agencies that have participated in the exercise.
