Toledo.- Milagros Tolón, delegate of the Government of Spain in Castilla-La Mancha, has participated in the inauguration of the environment of the Salón Rico and the Corral de Don Diego, in Toledo, a work that has meant a change in a special area of the Historic Center and that was the result of her commitment as mayor between 2015 and 2023. And his first words were in memory “for Ignacio Álvarez Ahedo, municipal architect who died in the Covid pandemic; and for Manuel Santolaya, former manager of the Consortium, to whom I recognize his imprint in this project. With Santolaya I had the first contact with this performance and under his direction we took the first steps and it was decisive to enter the Corral de Don Diego and design the intervention that we ended today.”
“We knew it was a city project”
For this reason, Milagros Tolón recalled that “from the City Council we understood that, in addition to the regular contribution to the Consortium, we had to shoulder with a complementary investment of more than half a million euros of own resources for the purchase and repair of one of the properties, because this is a city project. From that perspective, we conceived the Corral de Don Diego not in an isolated way, but as a part of a more global strategy of urban regeneration, putting the neighbor and his needs at the center of development.”
A project that she promoted as mayor of Toledo and president of the Consortium, and that had a triple objective: to recover the Rich Hall, a building of great patrimonial value; incorporate residential use “so that young people can come to the Casco to live, and open a new axis of mobility with the Carlos slope and the Plaza Mayor. And we did all that at a time that was not easy, because we suffered the crisis generated by COVID-19 and the Philomena of 2021, which forced us to make of the need virtue to seek more resources and face the emergency while attending to the city projects such as this one of the Corral de Don Diego,” said the delegate of the Government.
He has also had a recognition for the current manager, Jesús Corroto, for his “immense” work to make this space “available to the Toledanos and the Toledanas”.
“A strategy shared with citizenship”
Milagros Tolón stressed that it was a “strategy shared with the citizens, with the administrations and also with the Government of Spain, which I have the honour to represent today as a delegate in our autonomous community. With the help of the Government of Pedro Sánchez, we are building the Toledo we want. A strengthened city that today has an injection of 30 million euros from the Recovery Plan and European funds.”
He then quoted some of these interventions related to sustainable mobility and energy efficiency, “beneficial for our environment and our heritage, which improve people’s lives and which, thanks to the Government of Spain, are already a reality or are going to be very soon” such as:
-The arrangement of the streets Reyes Católica, Bajada de San Martín, Commerce, axis Toledo Indiana-San Vicente or Cristo de la Luz.
-The renovation of the lighting of the city.
-The recovery of the banks of the Tagus.
-The walkway of the Alcántara bridge.
-The recovery of the Vega Baja.
-The improvement of the Polygon Market.
-The renovation of the park of La Vega.
-The rehabilitation of the Supply Market.
-The pavilion of the School of Gymnastics.
-The future Performing Arts School.
-The pedestrian itinerary and bike path between Madrid Avenue and the Salto del Caballero.
-Or the bike path between the Polygon and Santa Barbara.
Along with this, the Government of Spain is actively investing in other projects of great importance for public services such as the Postal Museum, which is about to open
Tourist apartments
To conclude, Milagros Tolón has referred to a key issue today and in the coming years, “I do not want to miss the opportunity to refer to one of the issues that demands an intervention by the public authorities and that comes to this Historic Center: the proliferation of tourist apartments. In the previous legislature, the City Council left a well-considered regulation and with a solid legal basis that must be concluded. I encourage you, dear mayor, to take advantage of the work done and complete this task for the benefit of this neighborhood and its neighbors.”
Because, she reiterated, “as a delegate of the Government it is a pride to participate in this act in which I also want to reaffirm the commitment of the Government of Spain with Castilla-La Mancha, with Toledo, with its Historic Center and with the Consortium. A commitment that, after the increase of 2023, translates into a State contribution of 1.6 million in the Consortium Budget for this year. This commitment is shared and coordinated with the other public administrations through this exemplary institution, which allows the heart of Toledo to beat again from this Corral de Don Diego. Congratulations to everyone and, especially, to the neighbors of the Casco, who are the true recipients of our work.”
