Toledo.- The delegate of the Government of Spain in Castilla-La Mancha, Milagros Tolón, presided on Thursday the event organized on the occasion of the World Meteorological Day in which she has highlighted the importance of having a public research and information service such as that represented by the State Meteorological Agency.
Milagros Tolón thanked the territorial delegate of the AEMET, Eroteida Sánchez, for organizing this event, in which the former delegate of the Agency in the region, Marcelino Rojo, and María Feliz Pardo, predictor of the Albacete Air Base, who have reached retirement age, have been recognized.
Likewise, he has conveyed his congratulations to the volunteers Alfonso Marín de la Plata, from Villanueva de Bogas; Jesús Azcona, from Dosbarrios, and Diego Gutiérrez, from Madridejos, whose contribution with the sending of data to the prediction services has also been recognized in this event, held in the auditorium of the Chamber of Commerce of Toledo, next headquarters of the Government Delegation due to the works that are going to be addressed in the offices of Zocodover. The event concluded with the conference “At the forefront of climate action” by Ernesto Rodríguez Camino, president of the Spanish Meteorological Association (AME).
Climate change
“We approach this Day knowing that climate change has caused an increase in temperatures throughout the planet and its effects are increasingly frequent, more extreme and more strongly condition human activity,” said the delegate, who said that Castilla-La Mancha has suffered this situation with several episodes of torrential rain, historical snowfall and extreme waves of cold and heat in recent years.
Milagros Tolón has pointed out that the response of the Government of Spain to this challenge has been embodied in several initiatives, starting with the Plan of Transformation, Recovery and Resilience. In addition, the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan 2021-2030 “is the tool for coordinated action aimed at protecting our infrastructures and systems, and especially sensitive socio-economic sectors.”
Milagros Tolón has referred to the need to “strengthen the capacity for observation and adaptation at different scales, from the local to the international level”. For this, “it is essential to have the best scientific climate information, based on the analysis and prediction of possible evolution scenarios, to know, understand and work for a stronger and safer society in the face of the vulnerabilities that a changing climate implies.”
In this sense, “the solidity and solvency of the data provided by the AEMET and its meteorological models are a key tool to improve resilience against extreme phenomena and transfer key information to understand trends, make predictions or address climate change.”
The Government of Spain, said the delegate of the Government, “is at the forefront of climate action because we want to contribute to solving the challenges we face today and to the prosperity of society.” Along with this, “it is essential to have professionals such as those we recognize today in this event and volunteers who altruistically dedicate their time to meteorological observation”. To all of them he thanked “for your commitment and for making your vocation available to the public service of meteorological research and information”.
