Olive oil production in Spain will stand at 765,300 tonnes of olive oil in the 2023/2024 season, which is 15% above the low harvest of the previous season (664,000 tonnes) and 34% below the average of the last four, according to production estimates published today by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) and which is presented by the acting minister, Luis Planas, in a video available on this link.
The campaign, which began on 1 October, also estimated link stocks at 257,000 tonnes, 43% and 52% lower than the previous season’s initial stocks and the last four seasons, respectively. Next Wednesday, October 11, the ministry will publish the “Progress of the market situation with closing data of the 2022/23 campaign”.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food disseminates the data today, having received the production estimates of the autonomous communities in compliance with article 5 of Royal Decree 84/2021, which compiles the marketing standards of olive oil, with the objective of having harvest forecasts at the beginning of each campaign because they are a key tool for market transparency and to facilitate decision making for all operators in the sector.
The analysis by autonomous communities shows an increase in production compared to the previous campaign in Andalusia (+7%), Extremadura (+101%) and Castilla-La Mancha (+29%).
However, in Andalusia, the main producing region, with 70% of Spanish production, the harvest is estimated to be 40% below the average, especially due to the low production expected in the provinces of Jaén - the first provincial producer in Spain -, Córdoba and Granada.
The climate situation of recent months is the main determinant of the expected production. The episodes of high temperatures in full flowering caused flower losses and a decrease in the fruit curd. However, the trees have presented heterogeneous conditions in the different productive areas. This aspect has made it difficult to carry out the capacity in some regions.
These production forecasts are preliminary data that will be adjusted according to the evolution of the conditions of the harvest and the data of yields obtained throughout the campaign, since the harvest of the fruit does not start until November, according to the production areas.
