- That’s why both roads in the tunnel will be cut off from traffic tonight, affecting traffic on the S-10 between km 3,075 and 5,210.
- The detour via the Maliaño/Muriedas link, exit 4 of the S-10, will be marked as an alternative route.
- The effectiveness of the action protocols will be checked and the coordination of emergency services will be evaluated.
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility is going to carry out tonight a simulation of action and coordination for cases of accident with fire in the Maliaño tunnel of the S-10 road, in Cantabria.
To carry it out, during the night of today Thursday 6 to Friday 7 November, between 23:30 and 4:30 hours, the tunnel will be closed in both directions, extending the affectation to the traffic between km 3,075 and 5,210 of the S-10. During this period, the number of lanes per direction of circulation will be reduced to one until the Maliaño/Muriedas link through which traffic will be diverted to the sideways roads to the S-10.
To facilitate travel, an alternative itinerary duly marked by the S-10 will be enabled through the link of exit 4 Maliaño/Muriedas at km 3,844 (direction Bilbao) and km 4,340 (direction Santander).
Characteristics of the simulation
Current regulations on safety in State road tunnels require that personnel responsible for tunnel management, together with emergency services and in cooperation with civil protection agencies, jointly organize periodic drills to train and assess their ability to respond to an emergency situation in the tunnel.
In this case, the objective is to evaluate the coordination of all the actors involved (emergency services, tunnel managers, civil protection, etc.) In a case of fire accident in which it must be assisted and provide health care to the victims, as well as evacuate the users of the tunnel.
In this way, the effectiveness of the action protocols will be checked and the coordination of emergency services for cases of fire accidents in a tunnel will be evaluated.
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility; Civil Protection of the Government of Cantabria; 112SEMCA; Firefighters Town Council of Camargo; Firefighters Town Council of Santander; Civil Guard; Red Cross; 061 SCS; operating company of the AQUATERRA tunnel; and the RST of Tekia Engineers participate in the simulation.
For security reasons, this action will not be open to the media. At its conclusion, graphic and audio-visual material will be distributed from the Ministry ' s Communication Department.
Safety on the State Road Network
The Ministry works intensively for the safety of the State Road Network and, to this end, in addition to continuous work of rehabilitation and improvement, carries out simulations of accidents to alert the emergency services in case of need.
Thus, simulations have recently been carried out in Cantabria, in the Bárcena Tunnel in Pie de Concha of the N-611; in Somport Tunnel, in Huesca; de snowfall on the A-2, between Guadalajara and Zaragoza; in the Alongos tunnel from the A-52, in Ourense; or yesterday on the M-40 de Madrid.
