The government delegate in Cantabria, Pedro Casares, highlighted the speed of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility for the contracting of the humanization works of the N-611 and N-623 roads in Santander, whose formalization of the contract was published this Thursday in the Official State Gazette (BOE).
Casares has indicated that this “very important action” will involve an investment by the State in the Cantabrian capital of 11.42 million euros to improve the mobility of pedestrians and bicycles on both roads with “comprehensive and ambitious” jobs.
“We talk about a millionaire investment, long claimed in Santander and that has only materialized with this Government of Spain, which has a clear commitment to the capital of Cantabria,” the delegate stressed.
In this sense, it has valued other investments in the city such as those of the Port, or the cultural projects of the Naves de Gamazo, the associated center of the Reina Sofía Museum, the remodeling of the Municipal Library or the rehabilitation of the Menéndez Pelayo Library.
Once the contract for the works has been signed between the General Directorate of Roads and the company Compañía General de Construccion Abaldo, the execution of the works must now be planned for its implementation “as soon as possible”, explained the delegate.
He has praised that the next beginning of these works shows the “commitment” of the Government of Spain to make available to the Santanderinos a “more friendly, safer and accessible” environment since the works go “much further” to improve the road infrastructure.
Thus, the action includes the expansion of sidewalks, the installation of urban furniture, the planting of trees and the adaptation of lighting, as well as the creation of bike lanes. “An integral transformation that will revitalize the area and improve the lives and day-to-day lives of the neighbors,” said Casares.
HUMANIZATION PROJECT
The objective of this action is to humanize the crossings of the city, adapt them to the urban fabric and promote active, sustainable and safe mobility with the construction of bike lanes and the widening of the sidewalks.
Thus, the urban environment of the N-611 roads will be transformed, from the roundabout of the Valdecilla exchanger to the limit of the municipal term with Santa Cruz de Bezana; and the N-623, from the roundabout of Cuatro Caminos to the limit with the municipal term of Camargo; to make them more friendly, accessible and improve their functionality.
The works will consist of the following:
- Widening of sidewalks and/or execution of new ones.
- The installation of new urban furniture and tree species.
- The adequacy and improvement of the lighting efficiency of the track.
- The construction of 7.4 km of new bike lanes along both roads (2.6 km on the N-623 and 4.8 km on the N-611), to connect the new infrastructure to the network of existing and planned bike lanes within the municipality of Santander.
- Construction of roundabouts to improve the safety of the users of both roads and adjacent urban roads.
- A new lighting will be provided for all the glorietas designed and the adaptation of the semaphorization system to the new technologies according to the specifications of the City Council.
This action is in line with the State Strategy for Bicycles led by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. Once the works are completed, the sections of both national roads will be ceded to the Santander City Council in accordance with current regulations.
