The Cantabrian Hydrographic Confederation has begun maintenance, conservation and improvement work on the Besaya River, in the municipality of Cartes, with the main objective of slowing down the erosion processes that affect the left bank of the riverbed.
In this stretch, the formation of a central island of acarreo has been detected that hinders the natural drainage of the river. This circumstance diverts the flow to the left margin, where the erosion of about 15 meters of riverbank is already visible, with direct affection to the escollera that protects the Saja–Besaya collector.
The actions, which have an estimated investment of 81,400 euros, focus on the repair of the existing infrastructure and the re-stacking of hauls through the use of specialized machinery, in order to restore the hydraulic capacity of the riverbed and prevent new episodes of erosion. They will also be completed with the manual removal of invasive exotic vegetation, contributing to the environmental improvement of the river environment.
This work is carried out through the public company Tragsa within the Maintenance and Conservation of Waterways Program developed by the Cantabrian Hydrographic Confederation outside urban areas, since in urban areas the conservation and maintenance of waterways are the responsibility of the municipalities.
In the year 2024, the investment made in conservation and maintenance works of waterways in Cantabria was 1.46 million euros, distributed in 68 actions in 41 municipalities.
