The National Police has reached the highest number of personnel in its history in Cantabria, with about 600 active agents, after the incorporation of 24 new police officers into the ranks of Santander and Torrelavega, to which are added another 24 policemen in practices from the National Police School of Ávila.
This was announced on Thursday by the Government delegate in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, during an event held in the Magdalena Peninsula of Santander, where she presented, together with the Superior Chief, Carmen Martínez, the special reinforcement device of the National Police for the months of July and August. The event was attended by a representation of the different police units deployed in the community during the summer, including the Air Unit helicopter.
Gómez de Diego highlighted that this reinforcement of 48 new officers is a "historic milestone", since it allows us to exceed the record number of National Police personnel in the region. "We were just five officers to surpass the maximum registered and today we can say that Cantabria has the largest number of national police officers in its history," he said.
The delegate recalled that during the previous PP Government the staff of the National Police in Cantabria was reduced by 16%, with the loss of 89 troops between 2011 and 2017. "We have reversed this trend thanks to the wide public employment offers promoted by the Government of Pedro Sánchez, fruit of a policy of constant reinforcement and committed to public security," he said, noting that precisely this week the Council of Ministers has just approved the public employment offer for 2025, with 3,139 places for the National Police and 3,713 for the Civil Guard.
In this regard, Gómez de Diego wanted to highlight the commitment of the Government to citizen security and has advanced that "we are not going to stay here: we will continue to strengthen the workforce in the coming years because we believe in strong, modern and close public security."
Special summer device
During the months of July and August, as explained by the delegate and the Chief Superior, Cantabria will have an extraordinary reinforcement of human and technical resources that includes:
• The Air Police Unit (UAP), with a helicopter that will fly over Santander, Torrelavega and neighboring areas, manned by 10 agents for surveillance and operational support.
• The Air Safety and Protection Area, which will use drones both in preventive tasks and in the control of the use of these devices by third parties.
• The Cavalry Unit, composed of 9 agents, will patrol beaches, parks and areas difficult to access due to its orography.
• The Clandestine Immigration Response Brigade (BRIC), with 50 agents for preventive work and to speed up border traffic.
• The Special Security Operating Group (GOES), which will intervene in events and operations that require specialized action.
• Police Intervention Units (IPU), which will act in times of high concentration of people to maintain public order.
Gómez de Diego has assured that this operation "responds to the needs of a tourist community such as Cantabria", and has thanked all the agents who will serve in the region this summer.
"We are very proud of the work of the National Police. His dedication and professionalism, together with the other security forces, make it possible for Cantabria to be one of the safest communities in the world", he concluded, also thanking the citizens, "for their collaboration, for their trust and for continuing to believe in the work of our State Security Forces and Bodies".
