The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) launches this Friday, July 4, at 3:00 p.m., the first special operation departing from summer 2025, which will last until midnight on Sunday 6. During this first summer weekend, more than 4.7 million road trips are expected throughout the country, of which about 119,000 will take place in Cantabria.
According to the provincial head of Traffic, José Miguel Tolosa, the moments of greater circulatory intensity in the region will be concentrated in the afternoon of Friday and the morning of Saturday, in the entrance direction, as well as in the afternoon of Sunday, coinciding with the returns to the places of origin.
The main complications could be recorded in the surroundings of Torrelavega, in the junction between the A-8 and the A-67, as well as in the eastern A-8, between Laredo and the border with the Basque Country, where the circulation of heavy vehicles in certain hourly sections of the weekend will be prohibited. A high traffic density is also expected in the accesses to the most visited tourist areas of the community.
To guarantee road safety and traffic flow, the Civil Guard will deploy up to 180 agents of the Traffic Group in the Cantabrian road network. In addition, the personnel of the Traffic Management Centers, maintenance teams and emergency services will participate in the device, along with the collaboration of local police in the urban area.
The DGT calls for prudence at the wheel and recalls the importance of checking the vehicle before traveling, taking precautions against possible storms or hail, respecting traffic rules, not using the mobile phone manually and avoiding alcohol or drugs.
Last summer, between July and August, 615 traffic accidents were recorded in Cantabria, with a toll of three people dead - one of them a motorcyclist -, 26 injured in hospital and 325 slightly injured. Many of these accidents occurred on secondary roads and access to tourist areas, in short distance routes.
In this summer 2025, the DGT will develop three specific control and surveillance campaigns: from July 14 to 20 on alcohol and drugs; from August 4 to 10 focused on speed, and a third during all the weekends of the season focused on motorcycle control.
