The delegate of the Government of Spain in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, visited on Tuesday the quartering of the Civil Guard of Cabezón de la Sal. This is the delegate’s first visit after the completion of the energy rehabilitation works undertaken by the Ministry of the Interior, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), financed with European funds NextGenerationEU.
Gómez de Diego has been accompanied by the Colonel Chief of the Civil Guard in Cantabria, Antonio Orantos, and has toured the facilities, which have experienced an integral renovation of its thermal envelope with the aim of improving energy efficiency and the comfort of the agents. Both have been accompanied by the mayor, Víctor Reinoso, and the first deputy mayor, María Jesús García.
"The Government of Spain is committed to improving the infrastructure of our State Security Forces and Corps. These works not only modernize the quartering, but also represent a commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency," said the delegate.
The action in Cabezón de la Sal has had an investment of about 700,000 euros and has allowed to reduce by more than 30% the consumption of non-renewable primary energy, according to the criteria of the energy rehabilitation program promoted by the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry for Ecological Transition.
"These improvements represent a further step in the dignification of the daily work of the agents of the Civil Guard and in the quality of the services provided to the citizens," added Gómez de Diego, who also pointed out that the access and the waiting room of the post has been improved.
The delegate recalled that this type of action is part of a broader strategy of the central Executive in the Autonomous Community. In this regard, he stressed that "the Ministry of the Interior is also carrying out rehabilitation works in the Reinosa barracks and has recently completed the improvements in the Potes barracks, in addition to the El Dueso prison."
The quartering modernization plan responds to a twofold objective: to improve the working conditions of the troops and contribute to the fight against climate change through a more efficient management of energy resources.
Local Security Board
Prior to the visit to the quartering, the Government delegate has chaired the Local Security Board, together with the colonel himself, members of the benemérita, the Head of the Unit for the Coordination of Violence against Women of the Delegation, the Government team and members of the Local Police. Data for the first quarter of this year indicate a 16.9% decrease in criminal offenses compared to 2024, while conventional crime has experienced a decrease of 16.36%. In this way, crime in the municipality continues the decreasing path begun in 2023. In the field of VIOGEN, there are 29 active cases.
1,760 effective
Cantabria currently has 1,760 officers of the Civil Guard and National Police, which places the Autonomous Community very close to the historic maximum of 1,802 troops reached in 2011 after the socialist government.
This figure represents a significant recovery after the cuts suffered between 2011 and 2017 under the mandate of the PP, when 169 agents were lost, reducing the staffs of the Civil Guard and National Police by 9.37%. Since 2018, under the presidency of Pedro Sánchez, the Community has added 127 new agents, recovering more than 75% of the troops that were lost during that stage.
The reinforcement of personnel is framed in the context of the largest calls in the history of public employment made by the Government of Spain for the Security Forces and Corps - the last one, approved by the Council of Ministers last April with more than 6,000 seats - so that the increase in personnel will continue in the coming years.
