The Principal Commissioner, Francisco Herrero Fernández-Quesada, presented this morning in Santander the new official application of the National Police, “MiDNI”, which allows to carry the National Identity Document on the mobile phone with full legal validity, comparable to the physical format.
The presentation took place at the University of Cantabria, in the Guillermo Gómez Laá Room, during an information day aimed at officials of public administrations, institutions, and security forces, with the assistance of more than a hundred people.
Al acto han acudido la Delegada del Gobierno en Cantabria, D.ª Eugenia Gómez de Diego; el Fiscal Superior de la Comunidad Autónoma, D. Jesús Dacio Arteaga Quintana; y la Jefa Superior de Policía de Cantabria, D.ª Carmen Martínez Ruiz.
The new digital ID card, developed by the National Police in collaboration with the National Currency and Stamp Factory, is part of the Digital Identity Plan of the Ministry of the Interior. The “MiDNI” app is free, simple to use and highly secure. It generates a QR code with temporary validity, signed and digitally sealed by the National Police, which guarantees the authenticity and timeliness of the data shown in real time. This verification prevents the manipulation, falsification or improper storage of the information, neither on the sending device nor on the receiver.
The digital ID can be used to accredit the identity in person to public administrations —such as universities and educational centers— and to private entities —such as hotels or car rental companies—. However, in this first phase it is not valid for online identification, use as an electronic travel document or digital signature.
Spain is thus among the first European countries to incorporate an official digital solution for the accreditation of identity through the mobile phone. An innovative, intuitive and effective tool that marks a milestone in the digital transformation of personal identification services.
A second phase of the project is scheduled to be launched in 2026, which will allow the use of “MiDNI” for telematics, electronic signatures and other online operations.
