The Local Security Board met this Wednesday in the City of Santander to analyze the evolution of citizen security and set the actions for the summer season, when the city plans to host many activities that will attract a large number of people.
The Government delegate in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, and the mayor, Gema Igualada, have chaired this meeting that is convened annually to design devices and strengthen coordination for the events of the summer season, with the participation of members of the State Security Forces and Bodies and the Local Police.
After analyzing the data provided by the National Police and the Local Police to the Statistical System of Criminality, Equal has stressed that Santander continues to be one of the safest cities in Spain and has transferred the commitment of the Consistory to put the necessary means to guarantee the coexistence of citizens - through the collaboration of the National Police Force, the Civil Guard and the Local Police - in the devices that the commanders establish.
Conventional crime has fallen in the last year by 2.5% and continues to be below the average for the whole of Spain (30.76 crimes per thousand inhabitants in Santander compared to 40.55 in Spain).
According to the National Police, in 2024 there were 2,027 thefts in Santander, which represented a decrease of 8.8%; 51 crimes against sexual freedom, 8.9% less than in 2023; or 41 crimes for drug trafficking (26.8% less).
With regard to cybercrime data, they have risen by 6.7%, increasing computer scams and cybercrimes, although these are criminal actions that in many cases are carried out thousands of kilometers from the city through the global internet network, thus exceeding the municipal level.
The councilor has assured that, although the data of 2024 are positive, the administrations must not accommodate themselves, but continue to work together and permanently to improve this data and guarantee security throughout the year.
Both the mayor of Santander and the delegate of the Government have praised the “great collaboration” between the police forces and have analyzed the calendar of activities planned in the coming months, with special attention to the multitudinous and larger events, and the devices that will cover the different cultural, recreational, festive or sports events already closed for the coming months.
He has also assured that the objective is to guarantee a safe summer, improving the operability of police actions in the municipality: “We share the firm commitment to work together to ensure that citizens, neighbors and visitors enjoy a safe city and an atmosphere of coexistence, without disturbances or noteworthy incidents.”
For her part, the delegate of the Government of Spain in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, has positively valued the data known in the Security Board that reflect a decrease in conventional crime and has valued the daily work of the State Security Forces and Bodies and the close collaboration with the Local Police, which, in her opinion, "allows to offer citizens and those who visit us an environment of tranquility and confidence, key in a region as active in tourism as ours."
"Its work allows Santander to remain one of the safest cities in the country, as is Cantabria at the regional level," he said.
In addition, the delegate reiterated the commitment of the Government of Spain to "continue strengthening further the staffing of the National Police and Civil Guard, with the greatest offers of public employment in history". In this regard, he pointed out that the Central Executive "not only maintains, but steadily increases the resources aimed at improving citizen security."
