The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, through the Coastal Demarcation of Cantabria, has begun today Monday the works of replacement of the wooden walkway that gives access to the beach in El Puntal, in Laredo. The action, which has a budget of 70,000 euros and which will be completed at the end of this month of June, aims to improve accessibility in this area of the Pejino sandy area.
This was announced today by the delegate of the Government of Spain in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, who paid a visit to the area with the mayor of the town, Miguel González, and the head of the Coastal Demarcation, José Antonio Osorio.
The new platform will have characteristics similar to the previous one: it will measure approximately 95 meters in length, will have a free transit width of 1.31 meters and will be built with treated wood. It will also have handrails of the same material to avoid falls and a smooth and constant slope path. Environmental conditioning work will also be carried out.
This structure was placed in 2009 to improve the access of people and, in this way, avoid the wear and tear of the dunes. Now, due to the deterioration that this structure has suffered over time and with the objective that it continues to fulfill that environmental function, its renewal is appropriate.
Gómez de Diego has valued the importance of this action "for the environmental protection of the area and to guarantee safe access to users". "With this work we respond to a demand from the municipality and reinforce our commitment to the improvement of the coastal areas," he said.
Thus, the delegate recalled that the work is part of the set of actions that the Government of Spain is developing on the Cantabrian coast "to ensure a public use compatible with the preservation of the ecosystem".
For his part, the mayor, Miguel González, has recalled that when he began his term of office the Consistory fixed damages on that catwalk, but, since it was not enough, Costas was asked for a comprehensive action. After several months in which González has assured us to put "a lot of effort to ensure that this is complied with", the request has been met. For this reason he has shown his gratitude to this body, since "it is something very necessary for Laredo".
The Pejino councillor explained that at the end of the year "thousands" of tourists, citizens and pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago pass through this bridge, so "it is in the best conditions to facilitate access to the beach and boarding and disembarkation between Laredo and Santoña".
