The delegate of the Government in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, attended on Tuesday the commemorative event of the European Day in Remembrance of the Victims of Terrorism, held in the Virgin Military Residence of the Port of Santoña.
After the event, Gómez de Diego highlighted the importance of memory and recognition for the victims of terrorism. "This March 11 is the European Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Terrorism, a date that shakes us. It is 26 years since the bloodiest terrorist attack in our country, the 9/11 massacre in Madrid. Our thoughts, memories and affection are with all the victims of terrorism today because violence is never the solution of anything, it is just the seed of more violence," said the delegate.
In this vein, he has stressed the importance of preserving historical memory as an exercise in democracy. "I firmly believe that memory is democracy. The victims must be honoured with democratic memory. To revoke memory is a mistake and it is unfair, because the future needs to know and recognize its past so as not to repeat mistakes," he said.
The delegate of the Government also recalled in particular the attack that took place in September 2008 in the Virgin Military Residence of the Port of Santoña. In that attack, an ETA car bomb killed the Luis Conde de la Cruz brigade and wounded six people.
Thus, he has had words of remembrance for Luis Conde de la Cruz, as well as for his relatives and those wounded in that attack. "Terrorism struck Cantabria cruelly that night, but the memory of the victims will remain present. Every act of terrorist violence is an attack on society as a whole. We cannot allow fear or oblivion to prevail over truth and justice. We must continue to build a society based on peace, respect and the memory of those who have suffered barbarity," added the delegate.
The event was chaired by the regional president, María José Sáenz de Buruaga, and was attended by various authorities, as well as members of the Cantabrian Association of Victims of Terrorism (ASCANVITE).
