The delegate of the Government in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, today highlighted the commitment of the Executive presided over by Pedro Sánchez to public security, highlighting that Spain has achieved a "historic record" of troops in the National Police and the Civil Guard with more than 156,400 agents.
During the institutional event to commemorate the 201th anniversary of the National Police, in which a commemorative sculpture of the bicentenary was inaugurated outside the Santander Maritime Station, Gómez de Diego also stressed that Spain is among the 25 safest countries in the world and that Cantabria is one of the communities with the best indices in this field.
"This is a shared achievement, a conquest of all and everyone, in which the national police have played and play a central role with your daily work," he said.
The delegate of the Government has thus praised the "firm commitment" of the National Police to the safety and well-being of the citizens, and has highlighted the unanimous recognition of the Cantabrian society to the work of this Corps, which has fulfilled more than two centuries of public service with a clear mission: "to defend life, guarantee security and protect the rights and freedoms of all".
"The National Police is a modern body, adapted to the times and prepared to face new challenges such as cybercrime," said the delegate, who has expressed her commitment to continue collaborating with the body "from institutional loyalty."
In conclusion, he thanked the agents for their "vocation of public service" and reaffirmed the "indispensable" role of the National Police in society.
Commemorative event
The institutional act commemorating the 2011-year anniversary of the National Police has been presided over by the Superior Chief of Police of Cantabria, Carmen Martínez Ruiz, and the delegate, and has had the participation of various authorities.
During the ceremony, the award of recognition diplomas was given to the National Police personnel who went into retirement in 2023, who have been recognized for their effort, dedication and contribution to public service throughout their professional careers.
Subsequently, a commemorative sculpture of the Bicentenary of the National Police has been inaugurated, located on a parterre in front of the Maritime Station of Santander. The work, carved in stone by the Cantabrian sculptor José David García Fernández, has been sponsored by the Santander Bank. On behalf of the entity, its territorial director in Cantabria and Asturias, Manuel Iturbe Robles, has taken the floor.
