The Municipal Corporation of Torrelavega has awarded this Wednesday the Medal of Honor of the city to the National Police in recognition of its 200 years of service, in an act in which the delegate of the Government in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, has intervened, highlighting the work and professionalism of the body.
Gómez de Diego expressed his "sincere thanks" to the Corporation for this tribute, which he described as a "fair and deserved recognition" to the National Police for its trajectory in defense of the rights and freedoms of citizens.
In her speech, the delegate congratulated the members of the corps for their "excellent work" and "exemplary professionalism", stressing that they are "an essential part" in the security and well-being of the citizens. He has also attributed to the "great work" of the state security forces and bodies the "low crime rates" that make Cantabria one of the safest communities in the country.
Gómez de Diego also highlighted the "excellent collaboration" between the National Police and the Local Police of Torrelavega, as well as between the different institutions, valuing coordination and joint work for the benefit of citizens.
On the other hand, he has assured that the Government of Spain, presided over by Pedro Sánchez, will continue to strengthen police forces, as it has been doing since 2018. In this regard, he recalled that Cantabria has incorporated 100 new agents of the National Police and Civil Guard in recent years, "reversing the cuts applied by the former Executive of the Popular Party".
Finally, Gómez de Diego stressed that the National Police is a "modern body, which advances at the pace of society and adapts to new challenges", giving as an example its ability to respond to phenomena such as cybercrime or gender violence.
The event was attended by institutional representatives, police officers and numerous citizens, who wanted to join the recognition of the police force within the framework of its bicentenary.
