The Government delegate in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, highlighted on Thursday in the Port of Santander the "magnificent news" that the Government of Spain's commitments with key projects for the region, such as the cofinancing of the future intermodal station of La Pasiega, which will be connected to the port of Santanderino.
"The Government of President Pedro Sánchez has demonstrated time and again its firm commitment to Cantabria," said Gómez de Diego, recalling milestones such as the payment of the historical debt of the Valdecilla Hospital (144 million euros), the tripling of investment in the Proximity Plan, the cofinancing of the new MUPAC, the advances in high-speed railway works and the Hermida Gorge, as well as the start of works on the third lane of the A-67 motorway between Polanco and Torrelavega.
In this regard, Gómez de Diego highlighted the personal involvement of President Sánchez in the project of the logistics center. "In his meeting with the regional president, María José Sáenz de Buruaga, the president pledged to personally take care so that the intermodal station of La Pasiega could move forward, and so it has been," he stressed. "It is the responsibility of Cantabria to lead this project without further delay," he added, while recalling that Minister Óscar Puente had already confirmed in February to the regional president that the Government of Spain would continue to support La Pasiega, although it would not assume the direction of the station.
"Today, a news is officially announced that we have been defending for months: the Government of Spain will cofinance the construction of the intermodal station that will connect La Pasiega with the Port of Santander," said the delegate, emphasizing that the commitment of the Government of Spain with this project is "undoubted", as well as the leadership of President Pedro Sánchez and his commitment to projects that promote development and job creation in the region.
Thus, the delegate also recalled the investment of the Government of Spain in La Pasiega, with a contribution of 22 million euros, which represents 55% of the investment in the work of the logistics center. "This is another clear example of the government's determined commitment to the progress of our land," he said.
61 million European funds for the Port
Regarding the Port of Santander, Gómez de Diego has valued the obtaining of 61 million euros in European funds during the last two years, which have allowed to finance infrastructures such as the silo of automobiles in the Central Espigón of Raos. This project is currently in its second phase, with the expansion of two new plants. The delegate stressed that this initiative "optimizes the use of the public domain" and strengthens the environmental sustainability of the port.
In addition, it has highlighted the economic growth of Spain, revised upwards by the OECD, with a forecast of 3% for 2024 and 2.3% for 2025, highlighting that Spain is "the developed country that grows the most this year". According to Gómez de Diego, this economic context directly favours the Port of Santander and Cantabria.
To conclude, the delegate reaffirmed that the Government of Spain "is a strategic ally of this land", committed to dynamizing the economy, generating employment and keeping Cantabria on the path of growth and modernization.
