The Government delegate in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, visited this week the municipality of Reinosa, where she chaired the Local Security Board and saw the progress of several projects funded by the Government of Spain through the European Next Generation funds.
Accompanied by the chief colonel of the Civil Guard in Cantabria, Antonio Orantos, the delegate has highlighted the work of the security forces. In the Security Board, held in the City Council, a decrease of 1.02% in conventional crime and an increase in cybercrime was observed, which has grown by 63.83%, from 47 to 77 criminal offenses. Regarding the area of gender violence (VIOGEN), it was reported that there are currently 36 active cases under follow-up.
According to the delegate, the growth of cybercrime is a global phenomenon and is due in part to social changes and the increase in the use of connected devices. “We spend more and more time on the Internet, which exposes us to an increased risk of fraud, scams and other online crime. Therefore, it is crucial that citizens are informed and that institutions work together to prevent this type of crime,” he added.
4 million European funds
Subsequently, Gómez de Diego has visited the rehabilitation works at the Acuartelamiento, where the central executive is investing 2.3 million euros. There he has seen the progress of the works, which “go as planned” and “will represent a significant improvement in the comfort and habitability of the facilities”. Gómez de Diego, who has advanced that the works will end in the first quarter of 2025, will also allow to optimize the spaces of attention to the public, with the aim of improving the quality of the service provided to citizens, creating a “more comfortable and efficient” environment.
Likewise, the representative of the Government of Spain has been interested in the urban regeneration and dynamization projects carried out in the municipality through European funds. Among them, he highlighted the urban regeneration of the Avenida del Puente de Carlos II, with an investment of 903,537 euros, which has allowed the construction of a covered children's park on Casimiro Sainz Street and the improvement of energy efficiency through the change of luminaires on the public highway.
In addition, the performance includes the rehabilitation of several children's parks, such as those of Manuel Llano Rebanal, the Cupid Park and the old Casimiro Sainz School. Also the installation of ornamental lighting in historic buildings of the old town, as well as the provision of charging points for electric vehicles in car parks near commercial areas. Within this project, LED digital screens, refurbished bins and distributed reusable packaging to neighbors and local businesses have been installed.
“The investment has been integral, ranging from urban modernization to sustainability, which has given a new impetus to one of the most important areas of Reinosa,” said the delegate.
Likewise, Gómez de Diego has valued another project financed with 996,520 euros from the Ministry of Commerce and Tourism, which will allow modernization and dynamization of the commercial offer of the municipality through digital transformation, the creation of the 'Citizen Card of the City of Reinosa' and the installation of a Wi-Fi network in the urban environment.
Recognition of the artistic floats of San Mateo
During her visit to Reinosa, the delegate also wanted to get to know the work of the local rocks in the elaboration of the artistic carriages of San Mateo, a tradition that dates from the beginning of the 20th century and that constitutes one of the main focuses of tourist attraction during the holidays. Gómez de Diego expressed his admiration for the effort and dedication of the peñista and stressed the need to continue promoting and disseminating this custom, which he described as a “intangible cultural and artistic heritage of great value”.
“It is essential that we continue to recognize and support the work of the peñas and the neighbors in general who, year after year, collaborate and contribute to keep this tradition alive. Their work certainly deserves our full recognition,” said the government delegate.
During her visit, she was accompanied by the councilor for celebrations of the City of Reinosa, Celia Gómez Pérez, and by Óscar Valle, a veteran bodybuilder, who gave her the book ‘Arte sobre Rueda’, which includes the history of Reinosa’s floats and rocks.
