The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has launched today, at 3:00 p.m., a new Special Operation on the occasion of the bridge on August 15. This operation will last until 24:00 hours on Sunday, August 18, during which a significant increase in travel throughout the country is expected.
In Cantabria, it is estimated that there will be 141,000 trips during this Operation Departure, with tourist areas, access to beaches and mountain environments being the places with the greatest presence of vehicles. In particular, it is expected that the point of greatest traffic intensity will occur in the accesses to Cantabria from the Plateau by the A-67, especially at its confluence with the A-8 in the surroundings of Torrelavega, as well as in the eastern area of the A-8, bordering the Basque Country.
The moments of greater vehicular influx are expected for the afternoon of Wednesday 14, the morning of Thursday 15 and, likewise, intense traffic is anticipated throughout Sunday 18, coinciding with the completion of the bridge and the return of vehicles to their places of origin.
To ensure safety on the roads of Cantabria, the Traffic Sector of the Civil Guard will deploy up to 180 agents, who will have the collaboration of the local police of the main municipalities of the region.
At the national level, the DGT expects more than 8.2 million long-distance movements on the roads during this bridge, becoming the days with the highest volume of travel throughout the year. In addition, due to the celebration of numerous festivities in different towns, short-distance trips will also be increased, especially during the nights and early mornings.
Road Safety Recommendations
In these days of travel, whether short or long, Traffic recommends planning the trip by the safest route and avoiding the most conflicting hours to avoid unforeseen events. From the accounts of X @informacionDGT and @DGTes, the news bulletins on radio and television, as well as on the phone 011, the situation of the traffic in real time and the incidents that may exist are reported.
On long journeys, ensure that the vehicle is in optimal condition, checking at least the lighting, the condition of the brakes and tyres and, once on the road, take breaks every two hours to prevent fatigue and sleep while driving from causing a disaster. When travelling to partying towns, whether day or night, never lower your guard, even if it’s a short trip, wear a seat belt, respect speed limits and road signs.
When going to make the trip to or from towns at parties, if alcohol has been ingested, do not look for excuses to drive, even if the maximum allowed has not been reached. It is better to let someone who has not drunk drive, contemplate the possibility of using public transport or even rest and spend the night at the destination, in hostels, hotels, etc., or in the car itself until you can make the trip in the best conditions for driving.
