The delegate of the Government in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, today criticized the Popular Party (PP) for its rejection of the path of stability proposed by the Government of Spain, since this "unjustified" decision generates a "serious prejudice" for all the autonomous communities and municipalities.
Gómez de Diego explained that the decision of the PP implies that the autonomous communities will have one tenth less fiscal margin in 2024 and two tenths less for 2025 and 2026. This measure translates into a reduction of 7,500 million euros for social spending in all the autonomies.
In the specific case of Cantabria, the delegate has detailed that the measure will involve a fiscal adjustment of 93 million euros between 2024 and 2026. This adjustment will have an impact of 17.6 million in 2024, 36.8 million in 2025 and 38.5 million in 2026, directly affecting the quality of essential public services in the community.
"The decision of the PP is an irresponsibility that citizens will pay for and that will have an impact on the quality of essential public services," said Gómez de Diego.
The delegate also recalled that the last Fiscal and Financial Policy Council approved the new fiscal path with the abstention of the autonomous communities governed by the PP, describing as "incongruous" that the PP now votes against, thus harming the interests of the communities that govern and of all citizens.
"There is no cause that justifies the PP's rejection of the path of stability proposed by the Government of Spain, a proposal that benefited the autonomous communities and municipalities of Cantabria, and for its extension to its citizens," he said.
Finally, Gómez de Diego added that the parties that voted against the path impose a total adjustment of 10.5 billion euros to autonomous communities and municipalities, a cost that, according to her, unfairly falls on citizens.
