The Government delegate in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, attended today in Madrid the Royal Palace to the central event commemorating the bicentenary of the National Police, which was presided over by its Majesties los Reyes, Don Felipe and Doña Letizia.
The event, which was held in the Plaza de la Armería, was also attended by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez; the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska; the Secretary of State for Security, Rafael Pérez; the Director General of the Police, Francisco Pardo Piqueras, and representatives of delegations from countries around the world, among other authorities.
His Majesty the King has handed over the Honor Plate of the Order of Constitutional Merit to the National Police, which has been collected by the operational deputy director on behalf of the entire institution.
During the event there was an aerial descent of two members of the GEO, a guide and the flag bearer - who carried the flag of the National Police -, a parade of a representation of police vehicles and historical uniforms and the delivery of the flag of the National Police to Don Felipe by two children.
First police force with national dimension
On January 13, the National Police celebrated 200 years of history. Under the motto “Committed to you”, this bicentenary commemorates the main episodes in the history of the National Police, its image before the citizens, the feeling of belonging of its members and its recognition as a reference operator in public security, both nationally and internationally.
It was the Royal Decree of January 13, 1824 that created the General Police of the Kingdom, the historical antecedent of the police institution. It was, therefore, the first police force with a national dimension with the function of “guaranteeing good and public security”.
The commemoration of the Bicentenary is being carried out throughout 2024 through a program of activities that take place throughout the national territory and are promoted and coordinated by the National Commission, an interministerial collegiate body attached to the Ministry of the Interior that acts under the Honorary Presidency of Their Majesties the Kings.
