The Government Delegation in Cantabria and the City of Santander have agreed on Thursday to strengthen coordination and the means to guarantee security in Santander, especially in summer, when the city will host a multitude of activities and events that, by their nature or possibility of bringing together numerous people, can have a potential impact on citizen security.
This has been confirmed by the delegate, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, and the mayor, Gema Equal, after the meeting of the Local Security Board that has been held in the City Council, and in which members of the State Security Forces and Bodies and the Local Police have participated.
This is the usual Local Security Board, prior to the summer season, to review the planned events and ensure the safety and better coexistence of citizens through the collaboration of the National Police Force, the Civil Guard and the Local Police in the preventive devices that the commanders coordinate and establish.
During the ceremony, the Government delegate in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, highlighted the importance of this “reinforced coordination” between the different security forces and the City of Santander, emphasizing the need to adapt to the summer season and the diversity of events that attract a large number of people.
Thus, it has highlighted the commitment to work together to maintain citizen security in an atmosphere of peaceful coexistence during the planned celebrations, in order to prevent and respond effectively to possible eventualities.
"The goal of this joint effort is for Santander to remain one of the safest cities in Spain. We want both neighbors and visitors to be able to enjoy a quiet summer without incidents, in an atmosphere of coexistence and security, enjoying the multiple attractions offered by the city and our region," he said.
For its part, Gema Igualó has thanked the collaboration of the State Security Forces and the Local Police, has requested more troops for the summer season and has proposed the integration of the municipal body into the State System of Police Database through the signing of a protocol between the City of Santander and the Ministry of the Interior.
The objective, he said, is to improve the operability of police actions in the municipality, making available to the Local Police information from the databases of the National Police regarding police history, removal orders, house search, search and capture, detention and transfer, detention and imprisonment, stolen vehicles or missing persons, among others, “because this is information and data that are indispensable for the exercise of their functions and having them available in an agile and immediate way will be positive for the safety of all.”
“We must work together to strengthen coordination and ensure that Santander remains one of the safest cities in Spain, bearing in mind that we are hosting an increasing number of events and of greater relevance. We share the objective that citizens, neighbors and visitors, enjoy a safe city and an atmosphere of coexistence, without disturbances or noteworthy incidents,” said Equal.
During the meeting, the calendar of activities planned in the coming months has been reviewed, with special attention to the multitudinous and larger events, and the devices that will cover the nearly 150 cultural, recreational, festive or sports events already closed by 2024 have been analyzed, to which they hope to add more than thirty that are still pending confirmation.
