The Government Delegation in Cantabria presented today to the residents of Santander the project of humanization and execution of bike lanes on the N-611 and N-623 roads as they pass through the municipal area. This initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, represents a significant step towards a “friendlier, safer and more accessible” environment for the benefit of all Santanderinos.
In her speech, the delegate of the Government in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, stressed that the project “not only involves an investment in road infrastructure, but a commitment to the well-being of the community.” “The expansion of sidewalks, the installation of urban furniture, the planting of trees and the adaptation of street lighting will add to the incorporation of bike lanes, promoting an integral transformation that will revitalize the area and improve the daily experience of those who live in it,” he said.
In this sense, Gómez de Diego emphasized the importance of the term "humanization" as the central axis of the project, reflecting a new philosophy of urbanism promoted by the Ministry that seeks to "prioritize the well-being of citizens". In addition, he said that both the Government Delegation and the Road Demarcation “are open to any questions or suggestions from citizens that could improve the project”.
Gómez de Diego expressed this during an event held this afternoon in the Government Delegation, where the Road Demarcation in Cantabria presented to about thirty neighbors the project, which will be on public display until April 23. The event was also attended by the mayor of Santander, Gema Igualada, as well as other members of the Municipal Corporation.
Humanization project
The objective of the project of humanization of the N-611 and N-623 roads is to improve mobility on the state roads within the municipality of Santander, through the creation of infrastructures more friendly to pedestrians and cyclists, as well as the optimization of road safety in various intersections.
Among the actions contemplated are:
- Humanization of section N-611: From the roundabout of Avenida de Valdecilla to the limit of the municipal term, work will be carried out on widening of sidewalks, improvement of urban furniture, adaptation of lighting and the execution of a new bike lane, all aimed at improving cyclist and pedestrian mobility in the area.
- Reordering of intersections in the area of Remonta: Measures will be implemented to optimize circulation and road safety in this area.
- Improvement of T intersections in P.K. 207 of the N-611: Two rotating intersections will be built in the crosses of Calle Campogiro and Ricardo León, seeking a more fluid and safe circulation.
- Reordering of intersections in the Industrial Estate of El Campón and Peñacastillo: Actions will be carried out to improve the fluidity of traffic and safety in this important industrial area.
- Humanization of section N-623: From the roundabout of the Hospital de Valdecilla to the limit of the municipal term, work similar to those of the section of the N-611 will be carried out, including the widening of sidewalks, improvement of urban furniture, adaptation of lighting and the execution of a new bike lane.
- Improvement of the section of the street Jerónimo Sáinz de la Maza: The rehabilitation of the rolling layer and repainting of road markings in the section of the N-623 will be carried out, with the replacement of services and other complementary works.
In total, action will be taken on 6.4 km of both roads (2.7 km in the N-611 and 3.7 km in the N-623), where 5.3 km of bike lanes and nine roundabouts will be built to pacify road traffic, sidewalks will be expanded, lighting will be improved and the semaphorization system will be adapted to new technologies, according to the specifications of the City Council.
The new cycling infrastructure, which will be deployed along both roads (2.6 km on the N-623 and 2.7 km on the N-611), will connect with the network of existing and planned bike lanes within the municipality.
Once the action has been carried out by the Ministry, the sections will be transferred to the City of Santander for its conservation and exploitation.
