Institutional statement of the Government delegate in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, together with the lieutenant colonel of the Civil Guard, Juan Martínez Ros, in relation to the event that occurred in Castro Urdiales:
Good morning,
I stand next to the Lieutenant Colonel of the Civil Guard, Juan Martínez Ros.
In relation to the events that took place in Castro Urdiales,
First of all, we would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and friends at this very difficult time.
The loss of a life in this way is a devastating blow to the Community and we join in solidarity to offer our support in these difficult times.
In relation to the facts:
Yesterday afternoon, around nine o’clock at night, in the town of Castro Urdiales, the Civil Guard checks the death of a 48-year-old woman.
The woman shows signs of violence and is found inside a vehicle.
The Civil Guard has deployed all the necessary resources to clarify the facts. From the very beginning, we have worked tirelessly to gather evidence, analyze testimonies and follow any clues that might shed light on this tragic event.
Once the investigations had begun, after a few initial inquiries, a case of gender violence was initially ruled out. And the investigation has been revealing new signs that point to an alleged involvement of the children of the deceased woman.
It was around 2 a.m., when the Civil Guard located the minors in the town of Castro Urdiales itself.
The arrest of one of the alleged perpetrators, a 15-year-old boy, and the identification of the other, just 13 years old, confronts us with the harsh reality of the involvement of minors in extremely serious acts.
The Civil Guard troops are focused on clarifying all the circumstances surrounding this case, and I would like to publicly thank them for their diligence and effort.
At the moment, our thoughts are with the victim’s family, but also with the young people involved, who, regardless of their actions, need support and guidance to face the consequences of their actions.
In the morning of today, the child under 13 years of age has entered a child protection center following the instructions of the Attorney General’s Office.
With regard to the detained minor, he or she is at the disposal of the Office of the Procurator for Minors, together with the police, in order to determine the appropriate measures.
At the moment, it is all that we can move forward.
The research remains open and we appreciate everyone’s understanding and collaboration at this difficult time. We reiterate our commitment to truth, justice and the protection of the rights of all citizens.
Thank you very much.
