The delegate of the Government of Spain in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, and the mayor of Colindres, Javier Incera, attended today the beginning of the humanization works of the crossings of the N-629 and N-634 as they passed through the municipality.
The works are promoted by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility headed by Minister Óscar Puente and have an execution budget of 530,427 euros that will be financed through the European funds of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
In statements to the media, both Gómez de Diego and Incera have highlighted the importance of this action for Colindres and have thanked the Government of Spain and the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility for their initiative.
The delegate of the Government explained that it will act on a stretch of 2.2 kilometers in length, improving the urban environment of the municipality and making it more accessible and safe especially for pedestrians, hence that “humanization label”.
Likewise, Gómez de Diego stressed that this investment "is an example of the commitment of the Government of Spain to local development", as well as the positive impact of European funds in the municipalities of Cantabria.
For its part, Incera has stressed that “the most important and beautiful part of this work is to see that an infrastructure such as a national road has prioritized the protection of pedestrians”.
“The most important thing is not the firmness of the road or that the car parks are going to be improved, but the space occupied by the neighbors, which gives it a sense of well-being,” he stressed.
In addition, he has also valued that it means “starting the new legislature by executing one of the most important works” and has apologized to citizens for the discomfort that the works can bring during the time that the works last.
The head of the State Road Demarcation in Cantabria, Rosendo Martínez, was also present at the event.
6 months execution
The works, executed by the company Senor and which will be continued for six months, will focus on improving the accessibility and road safety conditions of the N-629 and the N-634 as they pass through Colindres.
For this, space will be gained for pedestrians with the widening and expansion of sidewalks, and architectural barriers will be eliminated, at the same time as the pavement of the poorly maintained sidewalks will be renewed. Likewise, light beacons will be installed in the pedestrian walkways.
It is also planned to improve the exit of the parking area of the Alameda San Ginés and for this, the direct exit from the parking area to the N-634 (calle la Mar) will be allowed.
The project also aims to improve energy efficiency by replacing existing luminaires with energy-efficient LED luminaires.
The works will be developed in two phases, so that the first phase will focus on the performance in the N-634 and the second phase in the N-629.
Change in road policy
This project, included in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) financed by the NextGenerationEU funds, shows the change in road policy in favour of sustainable and active mobility, which will improve road safety for pedestrians and cyclists on the crossing, as well as its accessibility.
The objective is to generate, in relation to the State Road Network, a more accessible, inclusive and sustainable urban environment that helps decarbonize urban mobility and improve air quality.
