Eugenia Gómez de Diego has today promised the position as the new Delegate of the Government in Cantabria, in a ceremony held at the Paraninfo of the University of Cantabria that has been presided over by the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, and that has received wide assistance from political authorities, State security bodies and forces and representatives of civil society.
Gómez de Diego has focused his speech on three pillars: his commitment to progressive values and the defense of the rights of citizens; the role of the Welfare State as guarantor of equality and freedom, and the importance of collaboration between all institutions for the development of Cantabria.
Thus, he has guaranteed his firmness with political ethics, dialogue and institutional loyalty, fundamental to joint progress, while recognizing the importance of representing the Government of Spain in his homeland, a "very great pride" and a "great responsibility" that he will exercise "with loyalty, eagerness for collaboration and a strong commitment to the general interest and the common good", committing himself to work tirelessly to improve the region.
In front of about a hundred attendees, the delegate has highlighted the social advances achieved by the Government of Spain, including the creation of employment, the revaluation of pensions, the extension of maternity and paternity leave, the increase of the Minimum Wage or the Minimum Vital Income, among many others. “These are measures that make our economy grow and protect those who need it most,” he said.
“The Spain of today is a better Spain than that of 5 years ago: with more jobs, more rights and a stronger Welfare State,” he added, praising the “inexhaustible source” of progressive policies adopted by the central government.
In this sense, he has stressed the importance of having a strong Welfare State and "a government that takes care of the people, that promotes economic prosperity and employment so that welfare reaches everyone".
“Stretched hand”
Throughout her speech, the delegate has expressed her desire to work closely with the regional government and municipalities in the development of Cantabria. “Hand laid and collaboration with all the institutions,” he said.
Finally, she also wanted to highlight her firm commitment in the fight against gender violence, as well as the importance of caring for democracy. In this way, he has addressed the concern for polarization in society and defended the need to oppose ideas based on fear and hatred.
"Taking care of democracy is the opposite of letting these ideas take root in our democratic values," he stressed, recalling that "Spain chose to continue on the path of reforms, social advances and also coexistence."
The delegate began her speech by expressing gratitude to the Government for the trust placed in her and acknowledged the work of her predecessor, in the same way that she thanked her family for the constant support.
