The criminal offenses known to the Security Forces and Corps in Cantabria were reduced by 1.3% until June, going from 11,605 between January and June 2022 to 11,453 in the same period of this year, which marks a change of trend in crime data in the Autonomous Community.
The delegate of the Government in Cantabria, Ainoa Quiñones, has highlighted the work carried out by the agents of the Security Forces and Corps in Cantabria, both the National Police and the Civil Guard and the local police, because “all the bodies work in a coordinated and joint way to guarantee social peace, coexistence and security”.
In addition, Quiñones has praised that the Ministry of the Interior has continued in 2023 with the progressive increase in the staffing of the State Security Forces and Corps, already accumulating an increase of 8.2% since 2018. Thus, Cantabria counts at the end of June 2023 with 1,767 agents of the National Police and the Civil Guard.
On the other hand, Quiñones has indicated that, in the first half of 2023, the criminal offences known by the Security Forces and Bodies (National Police, Civil Guard and local police) fell by 1.3%, to 11,453 crimes. “The work of the police forces, together with the growing collaboration of citizens and the awareness of the importance of reporting, allows us to increase the clarification of crimes,” he said.
From the total of 11,453 known criminal offences between January and June, 2,760 corresponded to crimes in the field of cybercrime, which in the case of Cantabria has increased by 13.4% in the first semester, according to the Crime Balance made public this Friday by the Ministry of the Interior.
With these data, the crime rate in Cantabria stands at 40.2 criminal offenses per 1,000 inhabitants and places the Autonomous Community as the eighth safest in Spain, behind Extremadura (31.8), Asturias (32.4), Galicia (34), Aragón (36.6), Castilla y León (36.7), La Rioja (37.9) and Castilla La Mancha (39.8).
With this rate of 40.2 crimes per 1,000 inhabitants, Cantabria is 10.7 points below the crime rate of the whole country, which stood at the end of the first half of the year at 50.3.
CYBERCRIME ACCOUNTS FOR 24% OF INFRINGEMENTS
In the Crime Balance, the indicators are subdivided into two categories: conventional crime and cybercrime. With this, the Ministry of the Interior wants to have an X-ray improvement of the phenomenon of crime through the Internet.
Thus, in the case of Cantabria, of the 11,453 known criminal offenses between January and June, 24% correspond to those committed through the internet or through the network, specifically 2,528 computer scams and 232 other types of cybercrime.
As for conventional crime, 8,693 criminal offences were known in Cantabria in the first half of the year, which represents a 5.2% decrease compared to the same period in 2022. Compared to the previous year, wilful homicides and consummate murders fell by 100%, sexual assaults fell by 21.1%, and robberies with violence or intimidation fell by 13%.
On the contrary, there was an upward trend in vehicle theft offences, which increased by 18%; or known drug trafficking offences, with an increase of 56.8%.
For all the known criminal offences in the first semester, the Security Forces and Corps (National Police, Civil Guard and local police) have arrested and/or investigated 2,847 people.
MUNICIPALITIES WITH MORE THAN 20,000 INHABITANTS
On the other hand, the Crime Balance includes the safety indicators of the municipalities over 20,000 inhabitants (it takes into account the registered population and not the linked one), which in the case of Cantabria are Santander, Torrelavega, Camargo, Castro Urdiales and Piélagos.
In Santander, the first half of 2023 was closed with a crime rate of 44.8 criminal offenses per 1,000 inhabitants and the total number of known crimes increased by 8%. Meanwhile, in Torrelavega the crime rate stood at 40.5 and the known criminal offences fell by 4.8%.
