The Maritime Rescue coordination center in Santander, which depends on Mitma, through the General Directorate of Merchant Marine, coordinated last year the rescue, assistance or search of 160 people, which is 15% less than the previous year, in the 161 maritime actions attended. Seven actions related to the protection of the marine environment were also attended.
In 2022, 4 people died or disappeared in the area, 3 of them in activities not related to boats, such as falls of people from coast, surfing, windsurfing or scuba diving.
Vessels involved and traffic control
In 2022, 60 recreational boats, 8 merchant vessels and 7 fishing vessels were involved in maritime incidents in Cantabrian waters.
From the CCS Santander, 4,205 ships were controlled at the entrance and exit of the port.
Marine Rescue Activity in 2022 throughout Spain
Salvamento Marítima coordinated the rescue, assistance or search of 39,594 people (an average of 108 per day) in the 7,393 maritime actions attended throughout the area of responsibility of Spanish search and rescue throughout 2022. This is the annual balance sheet of this company dependent on the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) through the General Directorate of Merchant Marine, which this year celebrates its 30th Anniversary.
345 people have died or disappeared, 20% in activities not related to boats, such as: falls of people to the water from the coast, surfing, windsurfing or scuba diving.
Irregular immigration
Salvamento Marítima has coordinated the search for 1,208 precarious boats and has rescued 19,373 people (24% less than the previous year).
Vessels involved
In 2022, 2,826 recreational vessels, 508 merchant vessels and 406 fishing vessels were involved in maritime incidents.
Maritime traffic control
On the other hand, the total number of ships controlled by the Maritime Rescue centers in the Traffic Separation Devices of Finisterre, Tarifa, Cabo de Gata, Canarias Oriental and Occidental amounts to 150,997 ships and those controlled at the entry and exit of the ports in which Salvamento Marítima performs this function was 152,983
For a cleaner sea
During the year 2022, Salvamento Marítimo has monitored with its aircraft and satellites more than 259 million km2 of sea, an area equivalent to 512 times the national territory and has attended to 416 actions related to the protection of the marine environment.
