At the meeting, Teresa Mayans informed the representatives of the different Administrations that the Government Delegation has conveyed the concern existing among the local authorities about security on the island to the Ministry of the Interior, department with which she is in contact to analyze the deployment of troops of the State Security Forces and Corps.
“The presence of the State Security Forces and Corps as a whole in Fuerteventura has not stopped growing since 2017, currently placing us in an occupation above 90% of the list of places on the island. The policy of the Ministry of the Interior since 2018 in the whole country is to call each year in the competitions a greater number of places with respect to the registered vacancies,” says the subdelegate of the Government in Las Palmas.
“I want to underline that the residents of Fuerteventura can be reassured by the presence of the Civil Guard and National Police. And in the same way I want to send a message of tranquility to the groups of entrepreneurs, particularly in the tourism sector, because from the Government of Spain we are also very aware of the needs in terms of security that imply the record numbers of tourism that we are registering,” he adds.
According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, the known criminal offenses on the island of Fuerteventura increased by 1.4% in global terms in the third quarter of 2024, although there was a decrease, among others, in robberies with violence and intimidation (-33.3%) and in robberies with force in homes, establishments and other facilities (-24.5%).
“We must value the work of the police officers as a whole, including the collaboration of the local and regional police, to make Fuerteventura a territory that records values superior to those of the archipelago as a whole in terms of clarifying criminal offences. Here the percentage of clarified criminal offenses is high,” explains Teresa Mayans.
The subdelegate of the Government in Las Palmas has agreed with the representatives of the Autonomous Government, the Cabildo and the City Councils on the need to strengthen coordination between the three administrative levels, increase the operability of the Security Forces and Corps, and continue making efforts to increase the number of personnel in all police areas.
