A total of 1,842,750 citizens of member countries of the European Union (EU) are called to the polls in the Canary Islands in the elections to the European Parliament on Sunday, June 9, for which 2,945 tables distributed in 1,046 electoral venues will be constituted.
According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in the European elections of 2024 the archipelago increased its electoral census by 82,000 people compared to the previous call, held on May 26, 2019 (on that occasion next to the autonomous and local elections), in which 1,760,750 people were called to the polls in the Islands.
Of these more than 1.8 million possible voters, among Spaniards residing in the Canary Islands (CER), Spaniards permanently abroad (CERA) and non-Spanish Europeans residing in the Canary Islands (CERE), 922,506 are registered in the province of Las Palmas and the rest, 920,244, in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where the number of non-Spanish European citizens with the right to vote (25,777) doubles that of the eastern province (12,634).
The votes will be distributed in the approximately 3,000 tables distributed in the 88 Canarian municipalities, in which 8,835 people will serve as board members, advised by 2,945 representatives of the Administration.
In the province of Las Palmas there are 1,569 polling stations, distributed in 511 locations, while in Santa Cruz de Tenerife there are 1,376 polling stations and 535 polling stations, with the same distribution: one representative of the Administration and three members for each of the polling stations.
As far as the security system is concerned, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior, a total of 4,301 agents will work to ensure the normal conduct of the election day: 1,958 of the National Police, 1,753 of the Civil Guard, 67 of the Canary Islands Police and 523 of the Local Police, to which the support of the operative agents on Sunday may be added in the usual security tasks in the Islands.
In these elections in which Spain elects 61 MEPs (two more than in 2019) through a single constituency throughout the national territory, a total of 1,154 electronic devices have been distributed for the transmission of data from the electoral premises of the Canary Islands, 575 in the province of Las Palmas and 579 in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
