In her speech, Losa stressed that “Spain is a welcoming country as we have shown and we are showing every day in the migratory crises caused by war conflicts such as that in Ukraine”. In this regard, he recalled that since the Russian invasion of his country, 200,000 Ukrainians and Ukrainians have arrived in Spain “in search of a safe place” thanks to the temporary protection procedure, an extraordinary mechanism agreed within the European Union that was “an example of solidarity”. In Asturias, in these more than two years, 2,028 applications for temporary protection have been requested, processed and granted “which is a guarantee for them to have access to our public protection system immediately: go to school, have a doctor, be able to work”.
The government delegate mentioned “one of the great milestones” of the Spanish Presidency of the European Council in the second half of 2023: reaching an agreement for the reform of the European system of migration and asylum. A decision that was ratified a month ago, on May 14. “It is a historic political agreement between the 27 countries of the European Union that for many years had been a cause of division,” he said.
Delia Losa has highlighted the role played by NGOs such as ACCEM, “a fundamental pillar” in the third sector: “In their reception service, in addition to providing shelter to those who arrive in Spain, they accompany them in what they need to be able to settle in our country.”
