In 2023, 35 fatal accidents occurred on the roads of Asturias, in which 38 people lost their lives and another 114 required hospitalization.
With respect to the previous year, there has been an increase in fatal accidents (+13), deaths (+16) and hospitalized injuries (+24).
MOBILITY, PARK AND CENSUS OF DRIVERS
These figures are framed in a context in which nationwide long-distance travel has increased by 2 percent, the vehicle fleet by 1.7 percent and the number of drivers by 0.4 percent. In Asturias the overall mobility of 2023 increased by around 4 percent compared to 2022.
FIRST ACCIDENT ANALYSIS
By type of road. Conventional roads are still the most dead, accounting for 74 percent of the total (28). With regard to 2022, there is an increase of 12 people who lost their lives on these types of roads and four on motorways and motorways.
By accident type. The way out accounts for 39 percent of the deceased (15). However, it is the frontal collision that has increased the most compared to 2022, going from one to eight people who lost their lives due to this type of accident.
By user type. Vulnerable groups and media account for 42 percent (16) of the total number of deaths, with a significant increase in the number of deceased motorcycle users by 300 percent (from five to 15). The pedestrians who lost their lives are reduced by two. The deceased tourism users grew by ten.
By age. The group of people over 65 with 26 percent (ten) is the one with the highest number of deaths, followed by those from 35 to 44 with 24 percent (nine) and 55 to 64 with 21 percent (eight). The loss of a child under 14 years of age stands out. The largest increases are between the age range of 35 to 44 (five) and 55 to 64 (four).
By sex. As usual, the number of men far exceeds that of women. In particular, 28 men (74 percent) and 10 women (26 percent) lost their lives in 2023, 12 men and four women more than in 2022.
Per day of the week. According to the weekend definition from 3:00 p.m. on Friday to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, the highest percentage of deaths is recorded outside the weekend with 71 percent (27). Of the increase in deaths over 2022, 11 were outside the weekend.
Safety accessories. Three of the 17 deceased tour users and one of the two vans did not use a seatbelt. As for the motorcycles, one of the 15 people who lost his life on board this vehicle did not use the helmet.
The figures presented are provisional and refer only to the fatal accidents that occurred on interurban roads and victims registered up to 24 hours after the accident. The final figures already consolidated, which will include the victims within 30 days of accidents occurring in urban and interurban roads, will allow us to have the complete radiography of road accidents in Asturias.
