Zaragoza.- Students Aitana Porta, Kevin Ramírez and Paula Asensio, Malak Moussadek, Tamila Mamchur, Sheila Pérez and Martín Rubio have been awarded today with the prizes of the 5th edition of the comic contest against gender violence of the Government Delegation in Aragon aimed at young people from educational centers of the Community. More than 140 students, from 19 educational centers in Aragon, have presented themselves to this contest, which shows the commitment of the Delegation to the fight against one of the main problems of our society and which is addressed from education and culture and through storytelling in vignettes.
The government delegate in Aragon, Fernando Beltrán, has warned against “the negationist speeches, when not openly machista and retrograde, that flood social networks and fit in a significant part of boys and girls”. Faced with this, he has contrasted “the talent of the young people who have participated in this contest”, who have shown that “the comic, with its ability to tell stories and get into the skin of those who suffer from it, is an extremely powerful weapon to deal with male violence”.
The subdelegates in Zaragoza and Huesca, Noelia Herrero and Carlos Campo participated in the awards ceremony. In addition, the representatives of the High Educational Inspection, the Coordination Unit against Violence against Women and the Association of Booksellers of Zaragoza, who have been part of the jury of this contest, have attended.
At the event, there was a dialogue on the role of women in the comic and how cartoons can help in the fight for equality between the cartoonist Álvaro Ortiz and the illustrator and bookseller Beatriz Barbero-Gil. Álvaro Ortiz (Zaragoza, 1983) recently won the award for Best Children’s Work of the 43rd Barcelona Comic Book thanks to ‘La Petit Genia y el Monster del Valle’, second installment of his series starring Ayu, a magical being who lives exciting adventures in which he uses his ingenuity and his peaceful character to resolve conflicts. For her part, Beatriz Barbero-Gil (Salamanca, 1981) is an illustrator specialized in children’s books, with works such as ‘Oniro and the book of dreams’ or ‘Mira al cielo’; in addition, she is a member of the El Armadillo Illustrated bookstore in Zaragoza, specialized in graphic and comic books.
