The Ministry of Finance has completed the work of consolidation and recovery of the fort of Santa Quiteria, a fortification that, next to the castle, is part of the Historical Complex of Monzón. The works have involved an investment of about 300,000 euros and have been executed by the state company TRAGSA under the supervision of the technical services of State Heritage.
The subdelegate of the Government in Huesca, Carlos Campo, has today attended the act of reception of the works, where he has been able to check the result of the works. He pointed out that the regular interventions of the Ministry of Finance in this historic complex, of which it is the holder, “contribute decisively to maintain a heritage that bears witness to centuries of history and help to better understand the strategic relevance that this defensive enclave had for Aragon.”
The intervention has included the recovery of the sunken escarpas in the southeast and southwest, part of the knight’s wall and the gunboat. Likewise, action has been taken to improve the accessibility and safety of visitors, influencing the correct reading of the good as a historical document.
In addition to the consolidation and recovery of the detached walls, several archaeological discoveries have been made during the works, such as the limit of the round passage through the southwest flank of the wall, which marks the height of the pavement and indicates the thickness of the wall in that area, or the uncovered battery of cannons for two pieces of artillery.
This work has been framed in the set of actions that have been executed by the Ministry of Finance for the conservation of the whole of the Castle of Monzón. The previous intervention, in the year 2022, was aimed at the restoration of the dome of the castle’s cistern, with a budget greater than 30,000 euros. In total, the investment that has been destined by the Ministry of Finance in various actions of consolidation of the property exceeds one million euros.
